Subject: Virus Alert - W32.Sircam.Worm@mm

There is a worm - W32.Sircam.Worm@mm - that is currently going around. There are 2 threats from this worm:

1. For those using Outlook, the worm will send an e-mail to everyone in your address book.

2. If you detach the document, it will infect the machine that you detach/save it to. In other words, if you save it to a pc/server/disk - it will infect it.

So far, the virus is coming with documents that have the extensions of .att, .lnk, .doc, .bat, .com, .pif. This worm is changing, so this file list may be growing. Please make sure that your anti-virus is up-to-date.

If you get an e-mail with any of those above and you don't know who they are from, delete it. If you are infected, you more than likely will have to re-image your machine (which means reinstalling eveything). There is another fix on the Norton site that has you go into your machine's registry. I would not recommend doing that unless you are a computer tech.

From the Norton Anti-Virus site

This worm arrives as an email message with the following content:

Subject: The subject of the email will be random, and could be the same as the file name of the attachment in the email.

Attachment: The attachment will be a file taken from the sender's computer and will have the extension .bat, .com, .lnk or .pif added to it.

Message: The message body will be semi-random, but will always contain one of the following two lines (either English or Spanish) as the first and last sentences of the message.

Spanish Version:
First line: Hola como estas ?
Last line: Nos vemos pronto, gracias.

English Version:
First line: Hi! How are you?
Last line: See you later. Thanks

Between these two sentences, some of the following text may appear:

Spanish Version:
Te mando este archivo para que me des tu punto de vista
Espero me puedas ayudar con el archivo que te mando
Espero te guste este archivo que te mando
Este es el archivo con la informaci=n que me pediste

English Version:
I send you this file in order to have your advice
I hope you can help me with this file that I send
I hope you like the file that I sendo you
This is the file with the information that you ask for

This virus is a pain and apparently alot of people have it! I have been getting emails on both my vci and petawilson-online emails from people I've never even heard of with the above files attached. Apparently they've heard of me though since I am on their mailing list.

This is exactly the reason I don't use Outlook email. It is a magnet for these viruses.

Good Luck everyone!

Watch out because the virus will come from someone you know and the attachment could be any of their saved documents/files - My friend's resume got sent to everyone on her address list. And yes, she used Outlook too...

[> I love using outlook for my mail and the one thing I have done is not to have ANY addresses in my address book. At least that way if I do get it and my virus program doesn't get it... I don't pass it on to anyone else. -- Northstar, 17:49:48 07/24/01 Tue

[> Hi. I have previously, but rarely posted On Susan2 LFN board, but have been reading the boards for a couple of years. I wanted to thank you Lady Aeval for posting this information. I use Juno, and today I got two of these. I deleted without opening the attachments. You saved my computer. Thanks. -- SandyO, 17:08:29 07/26/01 Thu
