Subject: A Classy Guy

My family and I are big baseball fans, and since we live in Annapolis, Maryland, we follow the Baltimore Orioles. My stadium-building older brother Bob (a.k.a. "World's Best Big Brother") built the stadium for the club, Oriole Park at Camden Yards, and has season tickets there (his office is in the adjoining warehouse, and he tells me that meetings are frequently interrupted by the urgent need to see the action on the field, lol.) Well, if you are a baseball fan in this part of the country, that means that you are automatically a HUGE fan of "Mr. Baseball" himself, Cal Ripkin. I've really been enjoying seeing the ceremonies that teams have been having for him, ever since he announced his retirement for later this year. It has made me realize that that it is not only Baltimore area fans that appreciate him, but also fans from all around the major league.

I think that he's so widely loved and appreciated because he is universally acknowledged to be a "classy guy". And that's gotten me to thinking this week about what it means to be a classy individual. What character traits or qualities contribute to seeing a person in this manner?

To get on topic (you didn't think I was going to get there, did you? :), fans of Roy Dupuis have always seen him as being a classy guy as well.

One trait that I think is essential for this designation is *modesty*. We have all read or heard stories of Hollywood actors who think a *little too* highly of themselves--throwing tantrums on the set, making their directors, fellow cast members, and production crew thoroughly miserable. Such actors have a "me, me, me" attitude that quite often comes through in their interactions with the media.

Well, we all know that Roy is nothing if not modest. His fellow cast mates and others associated with LFN have had nothing but nice things to say about him. I'm sure that he has a normal, healthy ego (all actors do, to some degree), but he has obviously resisted the all too common temptation
to become completely full of himself.

So, what other qualities do you think he has that contribute to our perception of him as being "a classy guy"?

I have the feeling that one of the reasons he's able to keep his ego focused in a positive direction is because he didn't aspire to be an actor when he got into it. He seemed to be much more focused on sports and things that required thought, creativity, and analysis, so he sort of came at it from a different perspective. Not the usual, I'm f***** up and need the world to acknowledge and love me - perspective?

[> [> Let's see... I think the thing you need more than anything else to be a classy guy (or woman) is to be honorable. And then honesty... I think it takes a certain kind of "realness". (I also think this is MUCH harder to acheive for women than it is for men). Um... a kind of sensitivity to other people's feelings I would say... and ... a certain amount of modesty, as you said, Susan. Did I miss anything? -- Shirleym, 04:32:06 07/15/01 Sun

I like the fact that R.D. is always kind to his fans, even when he must surely be feeling tired, grumpy, or otherwise bothered. It takes a lot of effort to do that, and that effort requires character, IMO. -- sw, 22:20:03 07/16/01 Mon

What makes someone classy? Bits and pieces of thing surface in my monkey brain....
"But how does she treat the maid?"
"What's my motivation?"
"Don Quixote knew...."

A classy person may know they're the best, but also recognize the value in others. Knows that you can't argue with an underling, it's unfair. Examines their own reasons for being and purpose in life. Tries to make the world slightly better than when he entered it. Knows that true alchemy changes, not the rock into gold, but the alchemist into something finer.
