Subject: Plus Signs
Is it true that long time Burton Cummings fans
don't like the album "Plus Signs"? It seems that
the songs from this album are not used in
concerts or "best of" compolations. Has anyone
heard what Cummings thinks of this album?I
personally think it includes his most inspired
work since the Guess Who. Since the album came
out in 1990, it has been one of my favorites in
my collection. Any other comments about Plus
Signs?

It is true that some misguided, misinformed, and uncultured BC fans did not like PLUS SIGNS. However, for us more discriminating fans it was his best solo effort. It's now out-of-print and hard-to-find. Too bad it never got US release. "Rock Steady" and "Permissable to Cry" should have been monster hits.

Have to agree with Odie on this one. I think more of the casual "I like only the hits fans" didn't like Plus Signs- the only minus was the absence of that piano. This subject came up before on the old fanclub board. General concensus: not to many clunkers on this one.

Actually, there's a fan poll going right now on "favorite Burton Cummings solo album" at "http://www.onelist.com/polls/burton_cummings" . Last time I checked, "Plus Signs" was in the lead. I'll leave the poll up until Friday at midnight so everyone gets a chance to vote. There will be another poll going up, also..."What non-obvious Guess Who songs would you like to hear in concert?" -- Fred

PLUS SIGNS is DA BOMB! "The Rock's Steady" might be my all-ime favorite BC. "Boring Dreams","Bridge In Time", & "Take One Away" also stand out among the entire BC body of work.

The most disturbing criticism of PLUS SIGNS for me is hearing that Burton was trying to reinvent himself (this being a bad thing), as if his style should be boxed up for all-time within the confines of "Break It To Them Gently" and "Your Own Backyard". Those of us who've listened to BC since the 60's know that there are few limits to this man's versatility as a singer and love to see him stretching out in the songwriting area as well.
PLUS SIGNS communicated deep emotions and convictions. Had the songwriting approach been formula driven the lyical content would doubtlessly also have been less inspired.
Hopefully, the next installment will be as energized and honest.

No argument here. Plus Signs was an excellent album and should have been released in the States. Take One Away and Rock Steady are fantastic rockers.

there is no such animal as a Burton recording that his fans don't idolize.

You might go as far as to say that "If you don't idolize the recording you're not a fan of HIS, but rather a fan of a particular song or album."

I have been and remain extremely proud of Plus Signs...it was truly a work of personal passion...I wrote all the songs except for Take One Away in a matter of about two weeks, and then financed, produced, arranged the entire thing under my own steam, without having a record deal to back it...I still very much like Free, Bridge In Time, Permissible To Cry, and I'd Love to Talk...somedays i don't even mind The Workaday...many people say they think it should have been bigger, but i'm personally thrilled just to have it on cd, becayse it was never a work of compromise...there is very little i would change about the album, so it will remain a favourite point of my career for some time to come
Thank you for being so interested...it touches me.

I've got a question. On Plus Signs, which I love, the song I'd Love to Talk has always sounded to me like you were trying to sound somewhat like David Bowie. I've even fooled a couple of people by telling them it was Bowie, playing it and then revealing the true artist. Was this at least a partial intent?

Burton,
Have you thought about using the internet to post a few songs or an "album" rather than having to deal with the record companies. It seems to be quite a trend and a great way to bypass the droids at the record companies trying to find the next Britny Spears? You could even make it interactive in sorts by getting a little feedback (if you cared to).

BC, Yes I agree that it is a great album and I am lucky to have a limited edition vinyl (bought in Canada) at home here in Australia.
I love that album and as a loyal and devoted fan of you and gw for over 30 years hope you keep going for the next 30 into the new century. Hope to see you in Sydney on tour.
Hope you received my letter thru Nancy S at your Nashville
gig.
Keep up the GREAT work and hope to hear some unreleased stuff on a cd set soon
Ken

Whoa! I certainly can't add much to the last reply (THRILLED to finally see you here Burton!).
But to add to Doug's message, for the record, 3 songs, "Permissible To Cry", "Free" and "Take One Away" WERE used on the "best of compilation" THE BURTON CUMMINGS COLLECTION (Rhino, 1994).
My personal fave from PLUS SIGNS is "Boring Dreams"

Amen to that, Boring Dreams was a big one for me personally. Plus Signs came out as my marriage was deteriorating and it sure helped me pull through. Even though I've been a Cummings devotee since his first album, Plus Signs is still #1 for me.

I think Plus Signs is a great CD. My favorite cut from day one is "Free" and it still is. Great lyrics.

I remember loving Plus Signs when it came out and playing it over and over, almost exclusively. After many years of not having a new BC release I was starved and this quenched the palette nicely. I haven't listened to it in a long time because I only have it on cassette tape and not CD. Any chance this will be in the future re-releases Burton? You all have inspired me to dig the cassette out and give it a fresh listen. I'll let you know my current faves when I have finished.
Later,
