favorite GW tune), BC remarked how he was
alway surprised how much his songs meant to others.

he also talked about the origins of
some songs, including "pain train"
(another hall-of-famer in my view),
giving due note to kurt's contribution.

i also asked what he thought of lenny k.'s
take on AW, to which he made a joke about the $$
(i bet it is no joke-that thing received
air-time that could of made britney spears jealous),
but other than that deflected the question.

Burton discussed Kravitz's version on a canadian talk show. He said he was very flattered that Lenny copied Burton's ad-libs. He felt that Lenny was a good person to do it, considering his retro-influences such as Hendrix and the Beatles. Of course, Burton (far more diplomatic than than he was in the early 70's) wouldn't express whatever negative criticisms he might've had with the cover.
I guess that's where we come in. I'm very glad to have Lenny's AW out there, but that Bachman riff is part of what defines the song, and belongs in the song, however Lenny might care to remodel it. It surprising that a guitarist would have bypassed the opportunity to reinterpret that riff.

OK, I'll be the undiplomatic one -- while I can see how GenX could hear Lenny's version and like it, for me, knowing the original, I think the cover sucks! There! It just doesn't compare. can't hold a candle. Any argument?

No, there were plenty of AUUUUUGHHHHHHHHH look what
they've done to our song posts on the old board back in
april when it first came out. My first reaction when I
saw the video on VH1 was EEEEK! But Burton likes it.

I guess it is hard to mention Lenny's version without mentioning that sleazy, hip-gyratin' video. In the same interview on BYNON, Burton mentioned that he didn't particularly care for music videos in that they dictated or foisted upon the listener the images which the person would subsequently always visualize whenever hearing the tune. The problem here is that the person is then deprived of the opportunity to do his/her own visual interpretations of the music, limiting his/her imagination. Similar to the difference of reading a book vs. watching a movie I suppose. In the case of Lenny's American Woman, one tends to always picture than chick doing the grind on the hood of car.
So...that's a bad thing? :^)

You get no argument from me. I was very happy to hear the original IN the movie and the LK version during the credits that I could easily skip. My kids who are into most of the groups nowadays, both said YUKKKKKKKKK to Lenny's version. Course, they'd been raised on the real thing...

Exactly! One of the most definitive beginnings to any rock song, if not one of the most immediately recognizeable and it was stiffed. Glad to see someone else voicing my main complaint.
