Subject: Tidbits

Ok- guess I'll tell you some things Burton talked about.
He said he and Randy have been e-mailing each other w/ song lyrics and ideas for new stuff. He mentioned that Heart and Sweet Sweet are coming out on cd in the summer (didn't say, but I assume in Canada)
That he's aiming to build a high end website, and you'll be able to download some of his at home stuff.
he also said something about making all those videos available to us (he said he'd just got ahold of the Dating Game episode- man I missed that one)Hey I missed Dinah Shore too !
He also mentioned some songs from his cd (sigh- looks like I was wrong about that's what he was doing in LA-they're just talking still aaaahhhh!)
He mentioned his biograghy coming out in the fall will be called Colored Lights Can Hypnotise
Mentioned that a new song for the Guess Who tour called We Just Came From The USA
said No I'll never do a Christmas cd (sorry debr!) 'cause "it's all been done before"
said ky58 has been approached about going on the internet, that the tour will start in Canada and then go to US and maybe Australia
He said he got a kick out of being in a chatroom named after him. heeheehee.

Thanks, Deb! Now I can get back to work. BTW I've been playing almost exclusively Guess Who and BC at my gym today.
Gotta get those NY metropolitan area types prepped for the tour.

A biography, eh? That will be a must-have! Do you know if it authorized?

As authorised as it can get- he's been keeping a diary for years.

Michelle, think about it -- if BURTON is backing HIS story, wouldn't it be authorized?? :) I loved the chatroom last night, my husband thought I was crazy for spending 6 hours on my computer! (More or less). He wouldn't comment on it, (Burton) but I still haven't given up hope that there will be a Live at the Paramount II album in the future -- that is, that the GW will go to Seattle, too!

I'm not sure everybody gets it about Burton's biography. It's an autobiography. He's writing it himself. Can't get anymore "authorized" than that.

Oops! Something else I wanted to say and forgot to mention about the autobiography. (I was one of the people lucky enough to have been in chat Friday night and I don't think I've fully recovered! A real night to remember!) I don't think Burton said his book was coming out in the fall. Someone else said they had heard that Bachman's was. BC said he had about 200 pages done on his. With the tour coming up, it might put the book on the back burner for awhile, though hopefully not too long! Forgive these crazy, disjointed postings. I'm like an astronaut returning to earth. It'll take awhile to get my earth legs back!

Don't worry- most people new to the internet don't know Burton has been keeping a diary for years actually,he's been talking about a biography for years!(and years and years and years.......you get the idea) Gonna hit Heidi over the head with a beer bottle next chat session!

I was severely lacking in sleep as this chat was in progress, but here are some more tidbits:
Sam Boyd, BC's tour manager showed up for awhile. Sam seemed to think a hannakah CD might be a great career move for Burton ;-).
Burton mentioned that he felt "Dreams" was a song he'd really like to be remembered for, with one of his best vocal efforts. He also expressed the opinion that perhaps the combination of existential metaphysics with doo-wop was not a good choice in Life In The Bloodstream. He mentioned that he'd done over 300 situps and run 3 miles that day, as he is building his strength and body up for the rigors of touring.
Someone asked him what 5 LPs he would choose if he could only have the 5. I, being pretty nodded off at the time can recall him mentioning Abbey Road and The Fats Domino Box Set (big cheater). Help me out with the other 3, guys.
A warm & fuzzy time was had by all in ((((the chatroom***)))). Sorry I couldn't stick around to help clean up the post party mess (confetti and empty cyber glasses from too much cyber beer, martinis & champagne)..had to get up for a Saturday at the office.

.Well I guess Dan and Fred have proven that guys can keep a secret! Didn't let the cat out of the bag until we other chatters had been strung along for a few hours. It was worth the wait! Let's hope Burton enjoyed it as much as the rest of us did, and that he'll come back again sometime soon.....yes I enjoyed the 'universe' talk, and want to bring along a dogeared copy of a Carl Sagan book (Cosmos maybe) to give to him at one of those concerts. Can't believe he hasn't read Carl Sagan yet! It was fun hearing bits and pieces of the mans' personality. well, yadayadayada, I had a GREAT time!!!

Dreams is a great song...sadly overlooked. Should be on any GW compilation/anthology.

he also talked about the origins of
some songs, including "pain train"
(another hall-of-famer in my view),
giving due note to kurt's contribution.

i also asked what he thought of lenny k.'s

air-time that could of made britney spears jealous),
but other than that deflected the question.

Burton discussed Kravitz's version on a canadian talk show. He said he was very flattered that Lenny copied Burton's ad-libs. He felt that Lenny was a good person to do it, considering his retro-influences such as Hendrix and the Beatles. Of course, Burton (far more diplomatic than than he was in the early 70's) wouldn't express whatever negative criticisms he might've had with the cover.
I guess that's where we come in. I'm very glad to have Lenny's AW out there, but that Bachman riff is part of what defines the song, and belongs in the song, however Lenny might care to remodel it. It surprising that a guitarist would have bypassed the opportunity to reinterpret that riff.

OK, I'll be the undiplomatic one -- while I can see how GenX could hear Lenny's version and like it, for me, knowing the original, I think the cover sucks! There! It just doesn't compare. can't hold a candle. Any argument?

No, there were plenty of AUUUUUGHHHHHHHHH look what
they've done to our song posts on the old board back in
april when it first came out. My first reaction when I
saw the video on VH1 was EEEEK! But Burton likes it.

I guess it is hard to mention Lenny's version without mentioning that sleazy, hip-gyratin' video. In the same interview on BYNON, Burton mentioned that he didn't particularly care for music videos in that they dictated or foisted upon the listener the images which the person would subsequently always visualize whenever hearing the tune. The problem here is that the person is then deprived of the opportunity to do his/her own visual interpretations of the music, limiting his/her imagination. Similar to the difference of reading a book vs. watching a movie I suppose. In the case of Lenny's American Woman, one tends to always picture than chick doing the grind on the hood of car.
So...that's a bad thing? :^)

You get no argument from me. I was very happy to hear the original IN the movie and the LK version during the credits that I could easily skip. My kids who are into most of the groups nowadays, both said YUKKKKKKKKK to Lenny's version. Course, they'd been raised on the real thing...

Exactly! One of the most definitive beginnings to any rock song, if not one of the most immediately recognizeable and it was stiffed. Glad to see someone else voicing my main complaint.

I spoke with Burt Friday night (the night in question). I had noticed that he was online for quite a long time without stopping in the room I was, to say hello. So I sent him a message to ask him if he was asleep at his keyboard. He let me know what a wonderful time he had with all of you. He told me what you all chatted about. You fans had made his night. I hope to come to your chat room the next time he comes in. He's very articulate and very interesting. I'm sure you all had a good evening.

Not as thrilled as we were. Our Burton Fan Chat is an old-fashioned html chat, not IRC- probably not what your used to, but we have fun yakking there. But now that the Burton Cummings Fan Club has been officially blessed by the man himself, there are going to be a lot of verrry excited fans here. (once the shock wears off!)
