Star Baby greatest song of the seventies? Great as pure pop
I agree, but not qualified as even the greatest GW song.
The real answer lies inside the music and lyrics on the
GW's greatest album.....Wheatfield Soul. Far as I know,
( and there ain't much of that in reference to GW ) this
work of art is no longer released in any format. But if you get lucky..check out "Friends of Mine", "A Wednesday in Your Garden", or "Lightfoot", the final being GW's dedication to another of Canada's best songwriter/performer.

You shouldn't have any trouble finding "Wheatfield Soul" on CD from any number of on-line dealers. It's pretty cheap, too...under $10 Canadian, I think. -- Fred

"Star Baby" is the ultimate for me in the POP category (although there's definitely some good old R n R in there), I would agree that there are some better GW songs, but not on WS. I would hate to think that their 1st RCA LP was their greatest, as if it was all downhill after that. I would certainly rate AW, STL, AP,PITM, ROCKIN' & FLAV's ahead of it. Best GW song? Today, I'll go with "All Hashed Out".

Today, I'd have to go for UNDUN as pop single and AMERICAN WOMAN, LIVE AT THE PARAMOUNT as best GW song. My opinion probably would change on a daily basis also!

I thought of "Undun" for
THE ULTIMATE POP SONG (song...song...song...[echoes, get it?]),
but thought maybe it was of a too off-the-beaten track structure for that. Can you think of a song anywhere in the history of top 40 that's laid out like that one?
Yeah, the old "American Nurse, etc." was definitely a life-changing experience.

Don't know about top 40 but Moondance in many ways is similar and continues to receive extensive play on classic rock stations.

While my favorite GW song also changes on a daily basis, I do agree that their best album is Wheatfield Soul. I enjoy that album not only for sentimental reasons (it was the first GW album I heard and the one solely responsible for my GW addiction), but also for its diversity in the group's musical endeavors. The album highlights the group's ability to perform several styles of music, while claiming them all as their own. There aren't too many albums in my collection that do this.

Now, having the advantage of seeing all the Guess Who's repertoire, I can see they have better songs on other albums. But the albums containing those songs don't have the same impact that Wheatfield Soul still has.

I disagree. Some of the songs on the album are derivative in nature. The Guess Who was developing at this point in time and still trying to "find themselves". American Woman was a real breakthrough album as the music really became their music and sound. Wheatfield Soul is a good album and interesting to listen to but I don't think it is as good as most of the albums from American Woman on.

WS is definitely worth revisiting on disc as I did last year and now have a greater appreciation for it. I esp. like the use of sitar by Randy. But the later albums evolved into a much more mature sound that I wouldn't want to miss.
