Titus 1:9-11
9 holding fast the faithful word as he has been taught, that he may be able, by sound doctrine, both to exhort and convict those who contradict.
10 For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
11 whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest gain. (NKJ)

What this part of Scripture is actually saying is that even in the church (Arius) people were wandering off sound doctrine. This wandering off sound doctrine gave birth to heretical teachings. Even though this particular part of Scripture may not have been referring to the Arian heresy specifically, Paul was exhorting Titus to establish sound doctrine. I believe the heresy at the time was in reference to gnosticism. The disciples knew very well that Jesus was God the Son come in the flesh as shown in John's gospel, and acknowledged by Thomas.

John 20:27-29
27 Then He said to Thomas, "Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing."
28 And Thomas answered and said to Him, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." (NKJ)

The heretics who wandered off the truth did not necessarily do it for financial gain although that would probably be one of the main reasons. They also did it for power, fame, deceit. The true Christian is to be a tool to shut the mouths of the heretics.
