If I didn't know you better I would think that that statement was sexist, but I only know female scientists and not in your line of business although I am sure there must be some now. There are certainly more openings now for women than there were 20/30 years ago. Having said that though, it would be difficult I would imagine for a female to break through in certain parts of the world because no matter how well qualified she was she wouldn't be accepted in some areas purely because she was a woman. It's a bit like the question would you want a woman to pilot your plane!
