Subject: Tea time

Have you tried to buy an old-fashioned whistling kettle recently? I have. We're only allowed electrical appliances with a power rating of 1,000 watts or less in our caravan so after two years of suffering a tiny electric kettle that takes forever to boil I decided to invest in a traditional kettle that we can put on the gas hob. What a palaver!

I roamed the extensive kettle section in a huge Asda supermarket and saw only electric kettles. I did the same in Tesco. The local hardware stores were no better. Finally I found a stainless steel whistling kettle in a shop in the village near the caravan. Twelve quid! I came out of the shop holding the kettle aloft like the World Cup.

When it whistles I am transported back to childhood. That magical sound that says a cup of cheery warming char will soon be on the way. Mrs BB swears the tea tastes better too.

But I made the mistake of remembering too late that Amazon sells kitchen ware online and had a look. Kettles by the dozen! Cheap kettles included.

Never mind. It was twelve quid parted with gladly. And so a poem (with apologies to M.R. James):

Oh whistle and I'll come to you,
My shiny dome of metal.
Together we will make a brew.
My friend, the simple kettle.

BB
