One of the women with whom I was at school and with whom I'm still in touch is part Jewish. Her father's family were Jewish and he was one of the lucky ones and got out before the pogroms started (I think he must have been a German Jew). She was saying that he never spoke about his family because he would just start crying, and from what she did find out later most of his family were sent to the gas chambers. I think it was Belsen that Dad went into, certainly it was one of the ones in Germany itself. Rachel (My daughter) has been to Auschwitz, she went last year and said it was eery. There was no bird song at all in there. THere were birds singing in the areas outside the camp area but nothing at all inside, total silence. Vic's father died when she was still a fairly young teenager and I don't remember ever having met him although we all used to go to each other's parties etc, and I met her mother and sisters. One of her sisters was at school with Christine Keeler, who had actually been to tea at Vic's before ever she became a lady of ill repute,as had the other one, Mandy Rice Davies. Vic said Chrisine was absolutely beautiful. She was certainly stunning in that very famous photo of her in the chair!
