Steene had 6 tackles to Cox's 1, 18 touches to Cox's 11, is more dynamic around the ground, can run, attacks the ball in the air, played his best game of the year.

Cox ran under the ball all night, did not have a mark until close to 3qtr time, looked lumbering, they set up off him in the forward line because once the ball is in opposition hands he cannot even get to defensive positions let alone pressure ball carriers.

He got better late in the 3rd and through the 4th, as they say they don't get any shorter, but honestly it was not a great game from him, at this level with his physical advantages he should be dominating. He isn't.

I honestly think that his days as a second ruck are pretty much done.

He is still a very valuable depth player for if Cameron goes down and we need a number one ruck.

I would even consider giving him a contract for next year on that basis.

I honestly think that first and second ruck are 2 almost completely different roles now.

If you are the second ruck, expecting to be rucking about 20 percent of the time, you absolutely have to be able to play in another part of the ground, and it is my impression that Cox has reached the stage where he really can't.

I think Steene projects as a possible second ruck to Smits first ruck in the future. Smit just looks like a bigger unit, although I rekon he is only a 50/50 chance to make it at all, and his training in the backline might make or break his development.

With McCarthy likely to come in next year and immediately be our best ruck behind Cameron it may be that Smit comes under pressure.

The Cats ruck Stanley with DeKonig as second ruck. Cameron has Stanley covered, IMO Steene is a better match up for DeKonig and is more likely to demand accountability and apply pressure resting forward than Cox, who outside the static play where we send the pop kick to him marking at the highest point is close to useless.

Both DeKonig and Blicavs compete defensively in the air and run the ball out of defence. Cox advantages against them are minimised as they are both tall high jumping types and his disadvantages in pace are badly exposed on both.

I just think this might be an opportunity to reward a kid who has played some good footy in the 2s in a match that might suit him better than the big Cox.

The grumps on this board will chalk all this up to my undying and visceral hatred of the great man Cox,

Time will tell.
