49er Kevin, I agree with your post, but the point of this thread and the previous one is not "whether Long Beach has a storied tradition or potential", but rather can it generate interest despite a lack of quality wins. That really is the problem in the Big West, for every school but USU, its "fans" don't attend unless the team is winning or somehow it's in vogue. Supporting your team, just because they are playing, appears to be lost on most Big West school. Maybe it just a California thing, but immediate gratification is not a quality which builds good sports programs. In the south, athletics is religion; in California, it appears to be a fad. USU is somewhere in between.

I think BMF is correct; real program stability comes from alumni and long-term institutional support. Faddish students and the instant-gratification fans are not going to help Big West teams in the long-run. Long Beach is no exception. 3,000 fans per game is a joke for a program that has been playing BBall as long as the Beach. Your alumni and administration have clearly failed to define themselves, and waiting for quality wins is simply an excuse for improving now.

Irvine is an interesting situation. Right now, Jerry Green and the Anteaters are faddish, and they averaging 3,500 fans; perhaps this year they'll get 4,000 per game. The real test will be next year or the year after when Green is gone; will the faddish students have become strong $$$$ giving alumni, or will they simply to forgotten by the next faddish student who's more interested in the women's curling team, which of course will generate no long-term $$$ support.

Long Beach has a storied sports tradition and
>has plenty of potential when the quality wins start to
>consistenly occur. Just my thoughts. Go Beach!
