PACIFIC SIGNS THREE FOR 2002-03

STOCKTON, Calif. — University of the Pacific Head Basketball Coach Bob Thomason announced today the signing of three prospects for the 2002-03 basketball season.

The Tigers have signed David Doubley, Matt Kemper and Tyler Newton to national letters of intent.

Doubley, a 6-2 guard from Vallejo, Calif., is a sophomore at Skyline College in San Bruno, Calif.  This season, Doubley averaged 16.0 points per game, including a 30 point performance.  He led the state in assists with 9.1 per game, and was 10th among all California JC players in three-point field goal percentage (.462).  Doubley earned California Community College All-State Team honors after leading the Trojans to a record of 27-10.  He set school records for career assists (592), games played (72) and consecutive games played (72).  He scored 28 and 24 points in Skyline's two State Junior College Championship games in the Spanos Center this March. Doubley prepped at Berkeley High School in Berkeley, Calif.

"David is a student of the game," said Thomason.  "He plays the game with great enthusiasm, and brings tremendous back-court skills to our program.  I'm looking forward to working with David and watching him develop."

Kemper is a 6-9 center/forward from Fresno, Calif.  He just finished his first year at Irvine Valley College, but spent the year as a redshirt.  He played his first year at Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, Calif., where he averaged 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.   His best game at Cuesta was a 23 point effort against Hartnell College.  Kemper will have three years of eligibility for the Tigers.  He attended Hoover High School in Fresno, Calif.  He helped Hoover to the CIF Division I championship as a senior, earning all-city honors.

"Matt is a solid post player who has tremendous skills.  He is an excellent shooter and passer, and should excel at Pacific.  We are looking forward to coaching and working with Matt for the next three years."

Newton comes to Pacific from Shasta College in Redding, Calif.  He is a 6-10 center/forward and will bring versatility to the Tigers.  He helped lead the Knights to a Golden Valley Conference championship as a sophomore in 2001-02, averaging 13.6 points, 6.8 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game.  He earned First Team All-Golden Valley Conference honors, and was named to the California Community College All-State Team.  The Knights were 28-6 overall and 10-0 in conference play last season, advancing to the third round of the state playoffs.  Tyler played his first year of junior college ball at Antelope Valley College in Lancaster, Calif.  Newton is from Burbank, Calif., attending Burroughs High School.

"Tyler can play both center and power forward positions for us, and is a good face-up shooter," said Thomason.  "He has a solid low post game, and we are looking for Tyler to make an impacthere at Pacific."

In the early signing period, the Tigers signed Myree Bowden to a national letter of intent.  Bowden, a 6-2 guard from Bakersfield, Calif., spent his sophomore year at Cabrillo College in Santa Cruz, Calif.  He was 10th in the state in scoring, averaging 21.5 points per game.  He had a career-best 39 points in a game earlier this season.  Former Tiger assistant coach Tony Marcopulos is the head coach at Cabrillo.
