Tigers get their men on signing day

Recent uncertainty whether Bob Thomason would be the coach at University of the Pacific next season didn't hamper his recruiting efforts.

Just two days after bowing out of consideration for the vacancy at Oregon State, the Tigers' 14th-year head coach on Wednesday inked all three community college players he wanted to national letters of intent.

Thomason said guard David Doubley and forwards Matt Kemper and Tyler Newton will add excitement and athletic ability to a solid returning nucleus.

''We've tried over the past couple years to get more athletic at the guard spots,'' Thomason said, ''and try to get perimeter guys who can shoot 3s and penetrate and pass. I think we're at the point where we have more players who can do that.''

Doubley attended Berkeley High, then Skyline College, where he led the state in assists with 9.1 per game and averaged 16 points. He shot 46 percent from 3-point range and earned California Community College All-State honors.

He will work with returning point guard Demetrius Jackson, junior Miah Davis, who redshirted after transferring from Stanislaus State, and Cabrillo College standout Myree Bowden, who signed on Nov. 20.

''I'm a playmaker,'' said Doubley, who also drew interest from USF and Cal State Northridge. ''I just try to make plays every play.''

Thomason called Doubley, ''one of the best point guards in the state.''

''David is very talented,'' Thomason said. ''He can really pass and he shoots the 3 well.''

Doubley already has played on the Tigers' home court. Skyline was in the state community college basketball tournament in March at Spanos Center. Doubley scored 24 points in a win over Cerritos in the quarterfinals and 28 in a one-point loss to eventual-champion Saddleback in the semis.

Kemper redshirted the 2001-02 season at Irvine Valley College with a knee injury. He played as a freshman at Cuesta College, where he averaged 7.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. The 6-foot-9, 240-pound sophomore from Hoover High in Fresno has three years of eligibility remaining.

''Matt is big and pretty strong,'' Thomason said. ''He can dribble and shoot.''

Kemper calls himself an unselfish player.

''I like to pass the ball and I just want to win,'' said Kemper, who also considered Northern Arizona and UC Riverside. ''I want to get to the NCAA Tournament. That's been my dream.''

Irvine Valley coach Jerry Hernandez was looking forward to having Kemper next season, but he believed Pacific's offer was too good to pass up.

''We told him last fall we would allow him to leave if a quality program came along,'' Hernandez said. ''That ended up coming true.''

Newton, a sophomore at Shasta College, will wear No. 41 next season, the same as his idol Dirk Nowitzki of the Dallas Mavericks.

''He's my favorite player,'' said Newton, who also visited Boise State. ''I model my game after his.''

Newton, who scored 13.6 points and grabbed 6.8 rebounds per game, can run the floor and shoot from the outside. He needs to add more bulk to his 6-9, 200-pound body.

Bowden finished 10th statewide in scoring at 21.5 points per game for former Pacific assistant Tony Marcopulos.

''The key is getting the returning players better,'' Thomason said. ''I think we'll have some players who'll bring some excitement to the fans.''
