Subject: what mandate?
In reply to: Lawshark 's message, "The Phenomena of "Broken Glass Republicans"" on 13:35:48 11/08/02 Fri

hard to see a mandate in a Senate split 51-49 or 52-48. The margin in the House is razor-thin as well, at least from an historical perspective. The whole notion of mandate is pretty much overblown if'n you ask me. It's just one of many ploys to get an agenda passed.

I wouldn't count on a switch necessarily in 2004 either, but there are a lot of pitfalls out there. The economy is pitfall number one. If it does not improve or even worsens with a GOP-controlled White House and Congress, it'll be problemmatic (coy's vote the rascals out). Iraq and the Middle East in general is fraught with potential hazards as well -- especially now that bin Laden may actually still be alive and looking to inflict further terror on the world (note here - I'm a Democrat but I'm not cheering for the things listed above -- I'm not pining for six more years of Bush but it's better than having him swept out due to major problems). He's also going to have to make considerable gains on the whole corporate fraud mess as it's becoming obvious that he has done nothing other than make pronouncements at this point.

As for the Democrats, they need a leader that will send out the basic Democratic messages that resound with the public. Protect Social Security and Medicare. Promote education, etc -- bedrock concerns for the middle class. Also, remember that the Democrats are likely to carry California and New York, which gives them a very nice launching pad in the electoral college. They need a candidate that inspires. No one really knew the name Bill Clinton in 1990...
