Yes, Strom and the Dixiecrats were for States Rights...a salutory goal...but mainly (if not only) as a way to keep the federal government from requiring integration. The Dixiecrats were flat out racist Democrats and there really isn't any way to sugar coat it. There is simply no way to praise Strom's 1948 run for Prez without incorporating the racist baggage.

As for YOU BFNY, my liberal brethren...I'll have to respectfully disagree on the second part of your post in that it is way too broad a brush.
