In 1999, the ERG Motorola Alliance won a contract to implement an integrated ticketing system in Rome and the surrounding Lazio region. In March 2001, ERG assumed full responsibility for the implementation of
this project. The system is the first of its size to be implemented with up to 500,000 smart cards expected to be in use by the end of 2001. The Rome system is also the largest scale transit fare collection system to use combination contact/contactless smart card. Passengers will be able to purchase and reload
cards at any of the 4,000 strong network of Tabaccai & Giornalai outlets throughout Rome and Lazio.December 2000 marked the beginning of the system rollout. ERG will operate the system for a period of nine years on behalf of the
customer ATAC (Azienda Tramvie e Autobus del Comune di Roma). When fully installed the system will include 9,700 ticket validators, 4,000 point-of-sale terminals, 200 portable smart card readers, card personalisation
equipment and ERG’s backend processing software. A central clearing house will manage the system, provide financial control andgeneral reports for the operators. ERG will provide and operate call centres, security, ticket sales, data collection smart card issuing and reload equipment and a reporting
system utilising the clearing house system. The clearing house is also capable of processing non-transit transactions. To date 7,200 validators have been fitted to the Metro, light rail lines, buses and tramways. In addition, 13 bus depots have been installed and 2,000 point-of-sale terminals delivered to theTabaccai
& Giornalai. More than 2,500 buses have been equipped with card and ticket validators. Tens of thousands of cards have been distributed and the daily transaction count continues to rise. All cards will contain the cardholder’s
photograph, name and date of birth. It is expected that the Rome system will processmore than 4 million transactions each day by the end of 2001.
