I could not agree more to what Vish has said. Why is it so wrong to have a female competing in the mens a grade at the upcoming national league. Should the decision not rest with the team for whom they would be competing for? Is it not after all that team that will be at a disadvantage with a weaker, slower, less aggressive player? Is it not then that team who will suffer any of the consequences of fielding the ‘weaker’ player.

From another perspective, maybe a region has no better alternative than to field women in their mens team, if she is the best player they can come up with then why should she not play? If 7 men can agree to take on the risk of playing a female then who is one person to say they cannot. In Australia if the women are good enough they are allowed to compete alongside the men, perhaps that is why the Australian women’s canoepolo team has been so dominant over us in the past. Shouldn’t we be encouraging that to change.

If a female player has trained, played, and competed with a mens team throughout the season then why make her stay at home for the one competition that counts. The National
Legue entry states Open Men, which means not exclusive....to women???

As people train and are exposed to a greater level of competition they improve, players will move from B grade to A grade, and for women we are lucky because for those few skilled enough where the Women’s A grade no longer challenges them in a way that forces progression they can take another step, into the mens grade. The Sirens showed the benefit of this at the recent Art Deco competition. So maybe the men are unlucky in this respect as they have no where else to go once they have reached the top in their field. Oh well tough luck, we can, so why take that away from us, if someone has put enough effort in to become
good enough to compete alongside the men surely they should be rewarded for that. As an association shouldn’t NZCPA be trying to encourage ALL of its players to be the best they
can be. Placing too many restrictions and requirements will only turn our top players away and we will lose them to other codes that are more supportive of there efforts to become the best they can be.

Lets not forget the fact that any women wanting to compete in the mens grade still needs at least 7 guys to agree that they are indeed worthy enough to be included in their team, no easy feet considering the attitudes of many of the men in NZ canoe polo. So surely the NZCPA should show us a little respect and stop putting in place these restrictions, there are enough unwritten ones we already have to battle through first, is that not enough? How hard
are you trying to make it. Let the decision of our inclusion rest with those of whom we will be playing for.
