Subject: About Toogood....

I wanted to bring this over here because the R&E board is just to noisy to fine tune any discussion.

Here's my take on that situation -- only conjecture, but sort of interesting.

Travellers are a different sort and this one is already in trouble because she was wanted in Texas and now she brought more attention to them by whipping up on her kid in the parking lot. Now, I watched the video pretty close and while I have no magical insight, I don't think the woman was that much out of control and that damaging to the child. Out of control parents don't restrain themselves until they get to the car. We've all seen it in stores, restaraunts, movies and churches.

No, in this case, I think the child was being disciplined for messing up a situation which (it is alleged) Travellers use to assist their living. The men generally do home improvement stuff -- roofing is a favorite, while the women often shoplift, if they can. I know this sounds terrible, but children are often used to cover shoplifting and the little girl might have been messing up her training.

The fact that she has no signs of abuse and the fact that she willingly went to the car indicates she was probably as surprised as anyone at her mother's actions. Whatever the reason, I'm betting something was learned. Right now, and this isn't to validate or justify the mother's actions, I'm somewhat concerned that the prosecuter has already trivialized the medical findings. Doesn't bode well for any sort of fair and objective prosecution. Jones seemed more concerned with how horrific it looked than with the actual consequences.
