I find that if I push down on my hair as I set up my hair under my wig (in the donut) I can find any problematic Bobby pins. I then redo those pins. I do the same once I put the wig on. If it hurts early on, it's going to be awful later and can lead to a bald spot.
A dermatologist can also do scalp injections to encourage the hair to grow back (it doesn't hurt, but pinches a little).
