I have a six year old that started in a toddler class at age 3.5. I signed her up initially because it was marketed as a movement/play/dance class with a parent. She really took to it and thrived in the small amount of actual Irish dancing, and the teacher then invited her to start beginner classes in the fall at age 4. I didn’t grow up dancing, so I had no idea what we were getting into. I didn’t know anything about competing, I thought community shows were the point of it all. I think there is an assumption that all parents used to be dancers themselves, so they understand what’s going on, but I’ve had to learn a ton by asking questions of the teachers, parents, and TikTok. With all that said, parents want tons of communication. Not only about class schedules, etc, but also just about the sport in general. An occasional parent meeting or opportunity to get to know other families in the school would be amazing.
