Judges use the 100 point scale to put the dancers in order, but the actual number score is meaningless. One judge may score from 99-80, the next may score from 74-60… All that matters is the rank. So for a graded comp with a single judge, you just put the marks in order, and boom, there’s your result.
At a championship (even regular Prelim or Open Champ at a Feis) the trouble is you have to combine multiple judge scores for a result—and as discussed, the all score differently. So each judge’s final raw score is put in order, and then the ranks are assigned a value from the Irish points scale. 1 is 100, 2nd is 75, 3rd is 65, etc. once all the judges’ raw marks have been converted to the Irish points scale, then they can be added together, because the numbers have been standardised. This also allows for all sorts of different judging methods such as a set panel of 3, rotating panels of 3, rotating panels of 5, set panel of 7 drop high and low, rotating five drop high and low, etc.
If there was something else about it that you’re not understanding, let me know and I can try to help. I’ll check back.
