In reply to: Lisa-DanceAgain 's message, "My (insert swear word here) bandwidth problem!" on 21:20:50 01/30/03 Thu

I pay for my site hosting by the month and my month runs from the 8th of each month. So I have over a week left in my month and I exceeded my bandwidth 3 days ago!!! I can buy more bandwidth in 500MB lots for $US5 and so far I have used 6 extra lots, I go through about 2 a day, so on average it is going to cost me $US10 a day to run the site until the 8th of Feb. Now this is fine because I can use the money that was originally donated to me, I still have quite a bit left thankfully. But I am thinking ahead, it is eventually going to run out and I haven't had any donations in ages. So my actual question is this...

I have been spending hours taking out the 2nd photo of each dress and putting it on a new page and making it a clickable link. Most people having seen the back of a dress once hopefully won't keep clicking on it which would hopefully slow down banwidth usage. But something just occured to me and I wonder if anyone knows if...I hope I can explain this properly...say someone is on a dress page, when they get to a page they use a certain amount of my bandwidth to download that page, if they then click to see a back photo and then go back to the original page, are they using fresh bandwidth each time they go back to the original page, does that make sense? Is it the same as several people viewing the page for the first time if one person goes back and forth to the same page? so having the photos on another page would use more bandwidth by clicking back and forth than if all the photos were on the one page and only viewed once.

Here is an example - say it uses 10MB of data to view a page..

Colleen goes to dresses page 7 - in doing so she will use 10MB of data transfer.

She then clicks to see the back of a dress which would use a very small amount, but when she goes back to page 7 she uses another 10MB, another dress, another 10MB.

By looking at the back of only 2 dresses, she has used 30MB.

If I had left the page alone with two photos of each dress, the page might use 20MB. So by trying to save data transfer am I actually making it worse? Or am I totally misunderstanding the whole thing?

I reduced the resolution of all of the photos a while ago so that shouldn't be the problem. I just can't think of anything else. I have 10 dresses waiting to go up and I would need to start another page for them which would only use even more bandwidth. The only thing would be to have only one photo per dress, but I like looking at the backs as much as everyone else!

Sorry this is so long and thanks if you have made it this far. I hate to complain to you guys!! Well I'm not really complaining just looking for a miracle cure I guess! I am only half way through removing the second photo from the dresses pages, it takes about an hour per page and I don't want to waste all those hours if I am actually making the situation worse.
