Maybe he actually flew to Chicago, where he knew somebody to buy a pistol from somebody without any paperwork (e.g. a Saturday Night Special), and then drove up to Spearfish Lake? A longer drive, which would have allowed him to get really pissed off.

Guns can travel quite legally as checked luggage. It would need to be unloaded (ammo could be in the case, just not in the gun) and he'd need to declare it. There may be more formalities - this is all second hand knowledge - but it's apparently not that difficult UNLESS you're traveling through places like NYC and Chicago that still (post-Heller) have been known to prosecute people who pass through their airports with checked guns that are legal at both their starting point and destination.

Which doesn't mean he couldn't have picked up the gun in Chicago, of course. But he could just as easily brought it with him. (BTW - depending on flight scheduling, folks in the Silicon Valley area use both San Jose and San Francisco airports - even Oakland, sometimes. None are more than about an hour's drive away except at rush hour. Lancaster would have had *lots* of choices on how to follow.)

Though Wes has had some nasty characters who reformed - the throwaway bit about Trey working with an old Nashville friend of Jennifer's who was recording Bluegrass festivals comes to mind - it doesn't sound as if we should expect a rapid change of heart from Joel-the-Jerk.

Even with the damages, though, he may have got off lightly. What if instead Wes paired him off with Marsha?

I thought the implication was that Joel saw and nabbed Randy's pistol?

I believe that Randy mentioned having a .357 caliber pistol.

"Looks like a .32, nice little pocket piece."
