I remember in the summer of 1973 that my wife and I flew from New Orleans where we were living to Denver and then drove to Cheyenne. I felt like a great weight had been lifted off my shoulders after escaping the humidity of the Deep South to the thin air of the Rockies. I was in average physical shape in my mid 20s. About twenty-five years later when I drove from South Louisiana to the West Coast via Amarillo, Tucumcari, Flagstaff, Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, I did not feel the same effect since I was much heavier and had ten days to adjust rather than ten hours.
