Subject: Winchester Harbor on Lake Huron?

Gee I thought it was on Lake Michigan. I missed that. I had it just north of Petoskey, not south of Cheboygan.

But then I am a SE Michigan person. My bicycling days up that way were back in the early '70s.

Winchester Harbor (fictitious) is somewhere near Rogers City on the Huron shore, between Cheboygan and Alpena. Wes's rather cavalier descriptions of geography, especially of his fictitious places, make them hard to pin down. At best they're just unclear, and at worst they're downright mobile.

Hey! Winchester Harbor is no harder to find than Spearfish Lake, Bradford or Wychbold. At least, we know St John's is in Newfoundland but I haven't been able to find Blanche Tickle yet and I'm not holding my breathe on that one. I guess all these mysterious place are located somewhere behind Wes' eyeballs.

I guess I remembered wrong. I thought when they delivered that sailboat (now sailing to Ireland??) to the Cleveland area(I am originally from Euclid) that they went under the MAC. Not later in taking the boat to Florida.

When I read the first chapter of Winchester Harbor I giggled a little.

There is a fuel dock at Salmon Harbor Marina which is located in Salmon Harbor (duh!) in Winchester Bay... one of the better recreational harbors along the Oregon coast.
There are folks that call it Winchester Harbor... You can find it on a map by looking for the town of Reedsport along highway 101 and the Umpqua River, then go downriver towards Oregon Dunes and the Pacific ocean.

Back around 1988 or so in late spring I was a passenger on board a power cruiser that was owned by an acquaintance. He pulled in to the Salmon Harbor Marina for fuel and lunch... I helped with the fuel hose... and if my memory serves me right, the guy that ran the hose had a blue uniform shirt with a embroidered name tag that read Jake.

Anyway, I kinda giggled when I read Winchester Harbor... but I'm pretty sure that Wes hasn't been to the Oregon Coast.

Been reading and looking at maps of Newfoundland. I noticed on the north shore(actually just off the north shore) is the town of Twillingate. Maybe Wes should have Mark and Jackie fly up there and check it out.

For new readers, the fictional town of Twillingate, Florida was featured prominently in Wes' first book, Rocinante.

Twillingate, NFLD, is a nice little town. Good place for spotting icebergs. Not at all close to St. Johns. Well.. at least in the sense of it's a moderate drive on small roads. What I can't remember is if that was the area I saw the official highway road-sign "beware of phantom moose", or if I saw the road-sign somewhere in the Cape Breton Highlands, in Nova Scotia..

I need to get up there again...
