I was dismayed by a recent book (Lost on the APpalachian Trail) which described the violation of Baxter Park rules in glowing terms. I wonder what effect the movie version of Lost in the woods might have but time will tell.

I read up on Japanese history around what you guys call "college". One of the things I took from that was a quote from around 30 years into the Tokugawa period - someone was really upset about how the next generation was behaving.

It appears that the next generation are pretty much *always* drunken wasters with no sense of responsibility. It is hard to be humble but *we* (of course) were perfect in every way.

Actually, I can think of an exception to that - Germans who grew up after the war often had a very low opinion of the previous generation and the legal straitjacket they had inherited.
