Subject: Winchester Harbor posting starts

I just posted the first chapter of Winchester Harbor. There are 36 chapters.

Sales on Lulu for hardcovers, epubs, and PDFs have also been enabled. RTF files, mobis, epubs, and PDFs are also available from the Spearfish Lake Tales Store.

Preorders have been shipped. A couple of customers reported a problem with the epub being unable to open, and it may have been a garbled file -- I don't know. I shipped all a revised epub file to all those who ordered the e-book downloads, and have not yet had any bug reports back about it. The revised file has been placed in the pack download file. If there are any more problems, be sure and let me know and I will do my best to make it right.

Very often when I put up a new story there are html bugs that don't show up when I tested it locally. I'll be up until about midnight local time, so if you notice something let me know and I'll try to get it fixed. Also, if you want to order a copy of Winchester Harbor in one of the available formats, I'll be available.

Incidentally, I'm currently in the closing chapters of the first draft of the fourth book in this new series. It's gone very well this weekend. There are going to be plenty of twists and turns to come in this series!

I have to confess that between the title and 'Brittany' it took me a couple of minutes to realize that Brittany was a person, not the northwest corner of France, and Winchester was not the old town in the southern part of the UK [having been to both places many yrs ago].

At any rate, off to another excellent start - I'm looking forward to the next 12 weeks!

In chapter 3, Jake told: "Anyway, they kept bugging me about what my problem was, and finally I told them if they wanted to know what my problem was they ought to go ask Brittany, since she knew exactly what it was."

Why didn't Jake tell that he saw Brittany cheating on him instead of just ranting away? Then he wouldn't have had the fallout with his family, didn't have to leave, and the whole silly book needn't have to be written.

Yeah, but then I wouldn't have a story . . . and they're hard enough to come up with as it is.

From Jake's viewpoint, it's a combination of pride and the idea that Brittany is such a fair haired girl in his families eyes that they wouldn't believe him anyway. The women in his family would see anything that happened as his fault, and he knows it isn't.

It's one of those things that doesn't have to make sense.

Yeah and thar's the point. The whole story centered ebout how boneheaded Jake could be and how may women he could fuck at the same time, and hardly anything else. I hope your next story will be up to your former standards.

Having just finished reading Winchester harbor, I really must disagree. It seems to me that you made up your mind before the whole story was even finished. But to each there own.

I think you have to remember the time frame for this story (late 70's early 80's) and what Jake had experienced prior to arriving in Winchester harbor. IMO he was searching for some kind of purpose and direction after leaving the Navy and having his plans shattered with Brittany's cheating. As the story progressed you could see that he had come to love getting out in the Chinook or on the Pixie. It was pretty obvious to me that he and Rachel would end up together about half way through the story but I couldn't way to see how it happened.

I enjoyed the whole story and am thrilled to see that we now have an entirely new cast of characters and locations to enjoy in future stories.

I just finished reading this story for the third time. If you have enjoyed Wes' previous stories, you should enjoy this one too. Whether on a boat or raft or in an airplane or train or behind dogs pulling a sled, Wes writes first-rate stories with interesting characters. This story is no exception.

I had to wait a little while to post, so I wouldn't echo Rachael by startin with "Wes, you bastard!". I'm joking of course, but there were times it was painful to read about someone's sailing adventures while I was dealing with a balky engine on my boat (the engine is an Atomic 4, a flathead design dating from the 40s). But now it's running like a top and we finally got out on Monday and did a little sailing.

So now I can say, "More please, Wes!"

There are several more books in the series. Now, it may be a minor spoiler, but the subject of balky Atomic 4s comes up in a couple places.

I'll be looking forward to those just as much as I looked forward to more of the Bullring Days stories, since I've enjoyed sailing for almost as long as I've been an auto racing fan.

And thanks for the spoiler. There's nothing that brings veracity to sailing tales than a balky Atomic 4 (although when mine is running well, I love it).
