Is there any place in North Carolina that allows under 18 fighters? My son has been fighting in Iowa, but they have recently sanctioned it so that you have to be 18 years old.

My understanding is that if under 18 (I know of 17yr olds, but not younger) they can agree to do an exhibition, so the fight wont count on their records, but they will be allowed to fight.

personally it makes no sense to pay the $300 for lic fees and eye exams and blood work to just do a exhibiton fight.

when you can fight in VA for $25 a year and you can fight at 16 you just have to fight someone who is not more then 2 years older then you.

you know to be honest sense my team has been going to va to fight. there are many less fighters backing out at the last minute, I just cost way too much for fighters to fight in NC. they went up on thier fees this year.

but back to the fighting under 18, going to va is the way to go.

I agree its better for guys on the bank account as amatuers, but I am not the biggest fan of full MMA rules in amatuer fights, and the GCA (if they are still the guys sanctioning most of the events) have some wide open rules for ammys.

Do the younger guys have to use the full unified rules (of course with 3 min rounds instead of 5)?

But even so I do agree, Va is alot more hassle free and events tend to come off better, NC is a bust to fight as an amatuer, but NC is making money.......so.....

Yeah not such a big fan of the elbows in the face for amatuers. I dont understand why they use the bigger gloves and allow elbows either. Bigger gloves make some things like chokes harder to do.....and protecting the face isnt really a concern when elbows are allowed.

I am sort of thinking I agree with Dana White with his opinion of amatuer MMA......that its largely pointless as it is now, and guys should just get paid and make it a pro only sport.

the gloves in VA are larger?? they seemed to be the same size as in NC. but i could be wrong.

My son didnt have any problems choking two of his opponents. Gloves seem to be that same size.

The gloves for NC and Va, are the ammy sized (6 oz) and my point is, in Va, when you can elbow to the head, why, on earth use the ammy sized glove.

It is without question, harder to choke someone with 6 oz gloves vs 4 oz gloves. Whether your son can do it or not doesnt change the fact the bigger gloves makes it more difficult for everyone wearing them. Just sort of pointless to have bigger gloves (ammy sized) when guys are elbowing to the head.

Well with all the problems with the gloves and elbows and knees dont come close to offset the positive you get by fighting in VA.

Well, I think to be honest its even. I agree alot less BS in Va, but one bad cut from an elbow, and a guy can have a scar from an amatuer fight that plagues him the entire time he chooses to fight, and if he moves on to fighting as a professional, it could be an issue.

To be honest, I dont think amatuer MMA should exist. Not in its current (promoter and state profitting from the fights) form. Alot of conflict of interest, and the people who seem on the bottom of the priority rung are the fighters.

But I do agree, NC is BS, with the terrible refs, A.L.E. agents who dont know wtf they are doing, and the commission (er Boxing authority) that seems totally uninterested in better training its officials or for that matter they themselves becoming educated on the sport that is making the state a bunch of money and giving these folks employment.

I would prefer, in NC my guys get the option to turn pro when they choose, instead of having to fight 5 times (which is a pretty stupid rule, considering some of the guys who turn pro do so after 3-5 losses, which just means they will be experienced at losing fights when they get paid for it).

Ah well long rant and un related to the original topic. We train knees standing and elbows are more to our benefit, but still I cringe when I see some sap getting wracked with elbows for free.

I agree alot of what you are saying, and maybe I am biased a little our team just finished our year of MMA in VA with a 10-0 record. Just seem to work better there. we haven't had anyone cut yet, and the blood on the gloves are of the opponents.

but I really do see what you are saying and making it all pro-fighters sound cool too

Just because your guys are not getting cut, doesnt eliminate the risk. I tend to think in terms of what is best for all fighters, instead of what is just best for my guys. Fighting in Va, is certainly best for my guys regarding finances, rules, and refs seem alot more competent there. We have only had 4 fights with their unified rules, and we won them all, they were all in one night. But, one kid who fought one of my guys got his ass beaten to a pulp with the elbows, granted having fought myself, and running a gym I know everyone takes it upon themselves when they decide to compete.....but I still felt a bit sorry for the kid, he had no idea what he was getting into.

Doesnt change the fact I want to see amatuer fighters not take undue risks to be able to compete, esp if its for free. More folks need to think in terms of what is best for the sport rather than what is best for themselves/teams.

That said I can see where trying to make sense to the boxing authority could wear anyone down. Hell I am done trying.
