Salam aleikum

What kind of du'a can i recite for my dead parents. I saw some people reciting surah ikhlas several time for the dead.I heard that we could not read quran for the dead except than making du'a for them.Could you pls clarify for me sister.

As Saalamu Alaikoum,

Praise be to Allah.

Allah tells us in the Quran that the dead are dead and can not hear us.. so therefore talking to them or reading Quran to them is of no benefit.

However, if your parents have died and THEY WERE MUSLIMS.. then you can make duaa asking Allah to forgive their sins.. and that is all you can recite for them. To recite Quran or anything else for them is Shirk.

If they were NOT MUSLIM then you can not make duaa for them at all.

"It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe
to ask Allaah's forgiveness for the Mushrikoon, even though
they be of kin." [al-Tawbah 9:113]."
