Praise be to Allah.

Unfortunately this is always the first response ones family gives to the news of a person embracing islam. You have to be strong and convince them from your actions that all their misconceptions of Islam are untrue. When they see the change in your behavior, how much more respectable a person you are, how much more cleaner you are, and how your lifestyle is one better than before, then they will come around. But this may take time so you have to be patient with them.

Remember, you respect your parents unless they try to get you to do something against Islam.

You may want to consider finding your own apartment if things get too bad with them. If you are a young woman you may want to look for a Muslim Female Room mate by putting an ad in the newspaper or college press. Otherwise, try to be patient with your family and prove their misconceptions wrong by showing them the truth of islam and its beauty.
