As salaamu alaykum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatu,

Is it incumbent upon a sister to follow the ways that her husband practises Islam? For example, he wants to only speak arabic at home, or is very strict within his deen, while she is more moderate, but not against anything within quran or sunnah. Is she obligated to take up his ways?

As salaamu alaykum,
Muslimah

As Saalamu Alaikoum,

The Prophet(saw) has ordered us to obey our husband unless he tells you to do something contrary to Allah or the Prophet(saw). [Bukhari and Muslim]

This is why we must be very careful marrying someone. We have to make sure we marry men who are pious and good and kind and who would not impose things on us that are not just.

As long as he is not trying to make you do something against your capabilities, or against Islam, then you obey him. Ordering that only arabic be spoken in the home may be against your capabilites being that arabic is not your language.

I suggest you contact your local Imam and talk to him about your situation so inshallah he can better advise you and your husband.

AND ALLAH KNOWS BEST
