I used to focus on trying to keep the clubhead perpendicular to the path. When I started doing it, it was a great swing thought to help me overcome my old habit of intentionally opening up the clubface during the takeaway to help offset a hook. But after a while it felt to me as if the swing was really restricted and that there was no freedom to hinge the wrists. So I stopped trying to keep the clubface perpendicular and instead just tried to swing back and through freely. Wow, what a difference!

The more I do the NG swing, the more I realize the simplicity of it. Most of the swing thoughts I used to start learning the swing I now realize were to help me undo all the extra junk I had incorporated into my old horrid CG swing. Once I've rid myself of the bad stuff, those swing thoughts don't help any more, they actually get in the way of the simpler swing.

GeneO.
