Rightfully, he had no room to have much of an opinion of what their daughter did--he had fathered her, sure...but he had not been a father. The difference was not lost on him, and it's for this reason he doesn't show much of a reaction to her car. If Angelina had agreed to the car, he could respect the choice mother and daughter had made. Even if it did worry him a little that the girl that young drove a car that had so much potential. "She was exposed young. I guess I'm not surprised she developed a taste for them."
He didn't know what would become of Sphinx and his son,if the two reconnected. He was quite sure that the large man could handle the situation, and seriously doubted that a marine would lose control enough to shoot a civilian--even if the said civilian was a criminal. He would be interested in meeting the young man that Sphinx had fathered, if the time came.
He watched the tears slide from beneath her lids, making crystal tracks down her cheeks. He wanted to reach out and wipe them away, for their presence broke his heart a little...they always had. He knew that would be pushing it, however, and considered himself lucky that she was even allowing his touch on her back. Her words, strained with her tears, reached him deep. "I know you are. I'm tired too." He had thought many times over the years that when his time came to walk the path that leads Home at the end of his life, that he would not care what he found there. He'd be happy only for the spiritual rest that had eluded him all of his life. "Just hold on for as long as you can honey. It's all you can do."
He watched as she refilled their glasses, setting his down before reclaiming her seat. He knew that sooner or later, the remnants of the past would trickle in here. Would she be strong enough to handle that...and the dysfunction between the two of them? For as much faith as he had in the strength of the woman he'd married, he did not not think that it would be so. The idea saddened him...he'd loved her for so long, he didn't think he knew how not to. Letting go would be hard, if it came to that.
His mind shifted gears then, trying to find a way to keep positive. If he was going to fight for them, considering them over before he'd tried defeated the purpose. He offered her a small, lopsided grin, requiring much effort. "You know what I've been up to, now. What have you been doing all of these years, Angelina?" He knew the obvious of course, but he wanted to know the little things. What she'd found happiness in, the brighter days of her life. He wanted to hear of happiness, to know that the years hadn't been all bad for her.
