The Samantha issue, which started in the pilot, was a big build up for so many seasons. Mulder even stated the finding her was his only reason to continue on the X-Files (in the S6 finale). We had sightings of her, possibly false, near misses like with finding proof about the conspiracy. To me, concluding her story should have been grander and a big piece of the puzzle for the mytharc. She could have been killed as he found her or made an enemy like CSM, I just wanted something more than a touchy feely ghost story.

The paternity issue was brought up so much in S3-6 and then dropped until The Truth. And when brought up there, its simply stated as fact that CSM is father to Spender & Mulder, no shock at this. I would have prefered Mulder trying to confirm this & being nervous that it might be true as he hates CSM the most. There should have been an "FU Dad!" in the final confrontation with CSM. Well, they killed CSM off three times now & he was seemingly out of the picture for S8/9 so I guess they thought of him as over until they resurrected him for the series finale. I think he could have been cool in future films. And they never got into his having that psychic ability he took from Mulder in Sixth Extinction. That could have been a great mytharc sub-plot.

One wonders who'll be in any future movies with so many supporting cast members killed off. The rumor is the next film is a prequel. Not sure when it takes place as Doggett & Reyes are supposed to be in it too (during S8?). Perhaps they are going to chuck out continuity. Maybe they should skip the mytharc and do a longer, more involved MOTW type story.
