Okay this episode was a long way from good X-Files...ICE good for example. It reminded me a lot of that one with the kid in the school and the psychic guy from India and there was more than a touch of SQUEEZE in the lets take the bad guy into your home.

So, mostly I would call this derivative X-Files. Not hideous but hardly worth telling your friends about. And really, the show is as easy to mock now as a Doctor Who episode. Oh, look there they go into the sewer with their pocket flashlights(Actually used that bit in a Buffy Fic I wrote Spike says to Buffy: "You about to go Muldering after that psycho in an abandoned building and me without my tiny pocket torch and cellphone.") Now Reyes will be babbling about things John refuses to see. Now John will call that BS. Oh, and now the incredible moment of FANFARE over a simple peice of evidence(present the damned photo Monica don't pause for dramatic effect and ask for a drumroll first).

That said, I did feel for JD in this one...and usually I think he is about as emotive as driftwood. But he seemed to actually want to keep people from dying and he was disappointed in the evidence PLANT by his mentor(And I remember an entire EPISODE on Mulder's mentor...this was kind of glossed over abit for such a stunning blow). And, while we are on the subject, did I nod off or did NOBODY question HOW the bearded man's hair was PLANTED in the first place? I mean, was he getting all sinner like and then stopping to do a little personal grooming? Or did the bad cop just get lucky when he picked a random hair off the perps carpet? Would it make more sense to pluck a hair off of the perp?

And while I hated almost every line Reyes had to deliver(since NOBODY on the X-Files can make a simple declarative sentence without wrapping it in enigma and mystery)...I did like her fall into the water and her discovery of the bodies and her straight shooting...but hated how they telegraphed John being attacked from the Reyes Fall onward...I was like yawning already(turned it off, had dinner and turned it back on for the "STUNNING" conclusion). Oh...and look...John "can't explain what he has seen here today"...now WHERE have I heard that BEFORE?

Also, I thought Scully was okay...kind of the voice of the Guru in a designer suit. It's always nice to see her, and she seemed to have some roll in this episode rather than being on call at home. Over on the Dana board I was critical of her Charlie's Angels (yes, I am the smart one) vibe and there is less of that on display in this eppy than the last one I watched(The one with XENA)...the only REAL evidence of it was in the interrogation room scene when JD walked in and R and S gave him the Charlie run down of how it was going with their little "mind game"..."Do you know this man? Well...do you, huh?" Sheesh!

Really, the only way the show could sink any lower into self mockery is if it had Burt Reynolds or Dom Deluis guest starring...Oh...WAIT!

Watching again but still wishing X cared a little less about STYLE and a lot more about substance.
