Hello all...My wife has a life-long dream of visiting Venice, and it looks like this may be the year. As a result, I have been looking at cruise lines on the web and came across P&O today, which reminded me of my cruises of a lifetime, and prompted me to do a search on SS Uganda. That's what brought me to this wonderful site!

It was 30 years ago this year that I had the privilege of "working" on the Uganda as a School Office Assistant. The "job" wasn't a paying one, but my travel and passage were complimentary; it was a unique situation where I could have the fun of the students side (selling stamps and padlocks, DJ-ing the student dances), and the luxury of cabin and meals, the same as the cabin passengers.

In actual fact, I did two cruises, back-to-back: #273, The Holy Land Cruise, and #275, The Easter Holiday Cruise, with destinations including Venice, Piraeus (Athens), Malta, Tangiers, Corfu, Famagusta, and Haifa (Jerusalem).

This evening I dug out the now yellowed envelope that holds such things as an invitation to the Captain's table for dinner, a couple of dinner menus, my ship's log and a copy of the "Good Morning" Uganda news (which I diligently typed up and ran off on the Gestetner each morning around 5 a.m.

I have such fond memories of the students I met in March,1972, most of whom were from U.K. and Ontario, Canada.
These two cruises were to train me for another adventure: a 1973 cruise through Scandanavian Europe, on the Nevasa..but that's another story.

Thank you for a wonderful reason to look back in time. Perhaps I am now motivated to scan some of my slides and post them on the web.

Cheers,

Gordon
