Miss Bahamas group formed
New group to apply for Miss Universe franchise
BY VANESSA C. ROLLE, Guardian Staff Reporter
A new Miss Bahamas Organization was launched on Thursday in an effort to raise the bar of pageantry in The Bahamas.
It is a transformation that is timely, as it entails the cultivation of a queen worthy to represent this country, with intensive grooming, coaching, training, educational and talent development as well as aesthetic enhancements.
"What is going to separate us from everybody else? I think a lot of times in pageantry today in The Bahamas, we choose a girl - and just how she wins, that's how she goes. There is very little effort put into developing these young women," said Michelle Malcolm, president of the newly established franchise.
The new pageant will be patterned after that of Venezuela, which she studied for some years. This year, that particular programme commenced with some 500 applicants, but only 24 contestants were chosen for the pageant. She explained that this is because Venezuela has very strict standards for what their contestants should be.
"We are going to do the same thing," she said. "Everybody can apply but we will have very strict standards as to whether your application will be accepted and you will become a contestant in Miss Bahamas. Once you enter Miss Bahamas, it's going to be a lot of work to get you ready to go on that stage and really represent our organization because we want to ensure that any young lady who enters our system is able to represent us well."
The pageant will also revert to being a black tie affair, culminating with a grand Coronation Ball immediately following the competition.
"Furthermore, we are hoping to really bring back the glamour that was once known for Miss Bahamas. It's going to be a black tie affair. You won't be entering with jeans on. Sorry, but we won't let you in," Ms. Malcolm advised.
A curriculum is being formatted to encompass the training of all delegates in the following areas: The Pursuit of Purpose, Ethics and Excellence: Philanthropy, Women's Issues, Speech and Diction, Stage Presence, Interviewing and Conversational Techniques, Public Speaking, Cultural Awareness, Music and Art Appreciation, Physical Fitness Training, Make-Up Application, Health and Nutrition, Hair Care and Styling Techniques, Advanced Breathing Technique and discovering the inner you whereby contestants are required to write a personal thesis.
"We are putting a lot of emphasis on fairness and standards. You must have standards. It can't be a situation where just anybody can enter your pageant. I know that might sound harsh but, we are not competing in a Miss Bahamas International, but we are competing internationally and we realize that in order to compete internationally, you must have international standards," Ms. Malcolm said.
The organization's first competition will be held in August, 2006. Females between the ages of 17-27 who are of Bahamian ancestry, or who are citizens of The Bahamas may enter the beauty pageant. Contestants should be at least 17 years old by Coronation Night. Two additional queens will be crowned in addition to Miss Bahamas. However, they all should be at least 18 years old and under 27 by February 1 in the year that follows their coronation.
Candidates must be single, must not have children, nor have ever been pregnant or given birth. They must also be between 5'5 and 6' 2 in height, with the weight being proportionate to height. Candidates Must be beautiful in the face and figure, intelligent and charming, while possessing poise, a pleasing character and high moral convictions.
The Miss Bahamas Organization currently hold the franchises for the following international pageants: Miss Earth ( for the territory of Haiti), Miss Asia Pacific International, Miss Intercontinental, Miss World Coffee Queen, Miss Mesoamerica International and Top Model of the World. It will also be seeking to garner the Miss Universe Pageant franchise as well when the contract with its present holders expire this year.
Contestants, judges and MBO directors and staff will also be required to sign a Code of Conduct agreement that dictates the type of behaviour that will not be tolerated by the Organization. Rules of Censure will also apply in the event such codes are breached.
"A lot of times these girls go to international pageants and their competitors are absolutely beautiful, and then they tell you how many surgeries they have had. Now, we are not putting all of our emphasis on the physical because physical beauty is just one thing, but we are also putting emphasis on internal beauty. Our young ladies will have required reading, and lectures, and they will have to write a thesis on who they are. Out pageant is very purpose driven. We are putting emphasis on teaching these young women to discover their purpose and use the rest of their lives to live it out," Ms. Malcolm said.
The new committee comprises of Patty Roker, Director - Public Relations and Marketing, Corporate Sponsorship; Brian Glinton, Director - Legal Affairs; Sean Sawyer, Director of Event Planning; Meka Knowles-McWeeney, Director -Pageant Affairs; Kayla Ward, Director- Business Planning and Development: Pia Glover-Rolle, Director of Talent Development; Gillian Wilson, Director of Educational Development; Deborah Geear, Pageant Producer; Mia Lange - Administrator; Jerome Sawyer, Manager -Media Relations; Dr. Barry Russell, Manager - Image Enhancement Team; Dr. Gregory Neil, official Cosmetic Surgeon; Dr. Juliette Hepburn - official Dermatologist; Denise Carter, official Physical Fitness Instructor and Annette Warren, Cosmetic Dentist.
For more information e-mail missbahamasorg@aim.com or write to Miss Bahamas Organization, Attention: Pageant Affairs Director, P.O. Box N-3141, Nassau, Bahamas. Application forms maybe located from the following locations, Michelle la Nuit on Shirley Street.

Winners: Paul (middle) King of Negros 2005 ; Siegfrid (left)2nd Runner UP ; Jericho (right) 1st Runner UP

Paul during the national costume

Paul during the swimwear portion

On the Top 3 level, Oriental Negros bets were the eventual lords of the pageant. Mr. Bayawan, Mr. Dumaguete and Mr. Pamplona were in for the final battle for the grand titles. The final question was quite close to the question for Margie Moran in the 1973 Miss Universe. Her question was, if you had one million dollars what would you do with it? Inspired by the Love and Peace cry of streets that decade she said, "I would buy a big house where I can live with all the people I love". Her answer gave the Philippines the second Miss Universe title. For the Hari ng Negros pageant the question was “…what will you do with the prize money?” All three gave similar answers that the money would go to their families. Siegfred who was beating-around-the-bush as he tried to expound was awarded the second runner-up title. Jericho who gave a smooth answer got the First Runner-up title. And Paul who looks like the actor Diether Ocampo gave glory to Dumaguete when he answered with tears that the money will go to his family. But the 23-year old computer programmer actually made a difference when he honestly shared that his family is having financial difficulty and that, he hopes to make use of the prize for his sister’s education.
The pageant successfully captured the majestic splendor and true wisdom of the city in the sky. With Kanlaon, the highest mountain of Negros, as the “royal” inspiration; indeed Canlaon City was the perfect venue to crown the truly deserving Hari ng Negros.
