Subject: Changes to playing management

Communications Team

The club is restructering its playing management for next season.

Negotiations are at an advanced stage for the appointment a full time strength and conditioning coach who will be responsible for the continuous fitness and monitoring of all full time and part time players in a more full time professional environment at the club.

Head Coach Ian Smith will be leaving to pursue other options elsewhere and a full time Director of Rugby/Head Coach who will be based at Billesley is being appointed. The specifications for this post will be confirmed shortly and applications (in strict confidence) will be invited. The appointment will be made well in advance of pre season training which will commence in mid June. Meanwhile the bulk of the current squad are in the process of being offered contracts to build upon the development in performance made towards the end of the season. In addition the squad will also be strengthened were considered necessary.

The club would like to place on record its appreciation of the invaluable service which Ian Smith has given over the last seven years. Along with Don Caskie and latterly with Kevin Maggs this season, Ian has developed the team into a respected side in the Championship from a lowly position in the third tier of English rugby when he arrived. The winning of the EDF Trophy at Twickenham was a highlight of his time in charge and provided some wonderful memories to Moseley people.

Ian will always be welcome at Billesley and the club wishes his well in the future and looks forward to seeing him at the club when he is able. Meanwhile we would encourage everyone to be at the Plymouth game on Saturday to give him a well deserved send off from his last Championship game in charge of Moseley.

Yes - I'd like to add my thanks too.
It's probably a good time to look back over Smithy's career with us. He came at a time when we needed stability and got us back to the 2nd tier......and a succesful visit to Twickers. Thanks......

Thank you Smithy for getting us where we are and I personally do not share the opinions of those calling for a change in staff. This is a tough league and people still do not give credit for the increased challenges after the 5 team cull at the end of 08/09.

All the very best for the future and hopefully the squad that has been built will continue to do you proud for many seasons to come.

I'd just like to add my thanks to Smithy - he's achieved a lot here, and the day at Twickers was unforgettable. Perhaps he feels he's done what he can, and it's time to move on. Not everyone can be Alec Ferguson and stay at a club for 25 years plus, sometimes a new challenge is needed and I hopw Smithy has found the right one.

I'll be there on Saturday, and will lend my voice to all the cheers.

I have no idea whether Moseman's comments are valid or not; they may well be utter taddle but that gives no one the right to question whether someone is a Moseley man (or woman) just because they don't agree with their opinions.
This is just the sort of nonsense Red and Black Pear seems to have referred to earlier.
If you have a proper counter arguement to make, by all means make it, if you have some factual basis for it all the better to persuade others but slagging someone off because you don't agree with them is a bit school-yard don't you think?

Perhaps moseman would like to tell us where the club would be without alan in 2002 when men stood up to be counted and who does he suggest to come and takeover from alan,i am sure if he is right for the club then alan would welcome the relief, you simply have not got a clue by that statement.Alan is not perfect but!!!!!!!!keep up the good work and what you have done for our club.

I'll bet Dave Warren is a bit upset by all these wrong references to Alan running the club. After all Dave is also not just a Director he is also Chief Executive and from what I see and have heard at meetings is in charge of the running of the club and the finances not Alan! Seems like people's own prejudices may be getting in the way of accurancy here and using this to air some personal grievence. What seems to have escaped people's attention is that the management (presumably Dave and Alan aided by others) are once again making the correct decisions for the club which they are getting scant credit for.

Also "moseman" why do you have to use some other person's name. You are not "moseman" but clearly a fraud trying to hide behind someone else.

Firstly a sincere thank you to Smithy for the achievements under his reign; primarily promotion but not forgetting that great day out at Twickers. The contribution of any individual to a club is finite and being honest I think Ian has done all that he can for Moseley. That's no criticism of Smith as a coach as I'm sure he'll go on to do well in his new endeavours. Personally I hope he'll be making full use of the great ability we've seen to spot and develop promising young players, especially forwards.
I've said for some time that change has been needed to freshen things up and I think it's particularly great news that there will be full-time conditioning support for the players as part of a move to a more professional set up all round. Well done again to "The Management" for another step forward. Let's hope for a good strong field of applicants for the new DoR.

Agree with you BillesleyNomad, and agree with most of the comments already posted.

I for one think that what Smithy has been able to achieve on such limited resources should not be underestimated. Good luck to him in the future.

A big thank-you to both for all your efforts over the years.

I see mention is already made by some of a replacement coach who has just seen his team relegated. Nice bloke I'm sure, but would such an appointment be progressive for Moseley?

Thanks Smithy for all your efforts over the years for Moseley. You leave the club a healthier position than when you took over. With more limited resources than many clubs in the Championship the club has progressed and this season I think we have seen the development of a strong squad of players. Like many who have expressed their views on the message board the victory at Twickers was one of the best days of my life and I will never forget it. I for one will be sorry to see you go and wish you good luck and success in whatever you will be moving on to.

It is a pity that people use the message board as a means to air their own personal, and usually uniformed, moans against individuals who have put so much into Moseley over the years and in this I include both the management of the club and the coaching staff. I doubt there would even be a Moseley if it were not for individuals such as Dave Warren and Alan Adam. I get an enormous amount of pleasure from Moseley Rugby Club and as we near the end of another season would like to extend my thanks and gratitude to not only the players and coaching staff (and in the circumstances Smithy and Mark Evans in particular) but to the management of the club and let them know that there work is appreciated.

I guess its just human nature and it happens everywhere but I think if those expressing negative views about any individuals at the club (who these days don’t even seem to have the courage to use their own identity) would like to get off their butts and put something positive into the club then perhaps they wouldn’t be seen as such a joke!

I wholeheartedly admit and accept I have been critical of Ian's selection policy throughout the season, however I would be at the front of the line to applaud what he has achieved since his arrival. There comes a point for many reasons that either you or your employer can't go on, I'm certain the directors would have expected a better finishing position and I'm certain Ian thought the squad he had built would deliver, but it simply didn't happen. Ian is a man that clearly loves a challenge, he came and he delivered where many would not have dared to tread. So therefore he has met his goal and probably rightly needs to test his skills at a level further whether that be a championship side with better funding or even a struggling prem side. Ian good luck to you, I really do hope you land the next step up the coaching ladder.
