Firstly congratulations to Bees. I thought they just deserved to win and they always looked more threatening in attack than us.

I think Phil got it right when he talked about us not operating as a team and I think the problem stems from us never having a settled side all season. Whether due to injuries or selection issues we have rarely fielded the same team and this cannot help to gel the players Some time ago a poster on this board listed the various permutations and positional changes that have taken place and for me the failure to decide upon, and, play, 2 reasonably settled units of forwards and backs has been one of the real negatives this season.

While I'm on negatives I cannot help but feel that playing players out of position does not help either. With the best will in the world I do not believe Ollie Thomas is a left winger and whilst I understand the rationale for giving him a place because of his goal kicking I cannot help but feel that his skills there are not enough to outweigh attacking and defensive frailties in that position. Chevvy Pennycook has had an outstanding season ( I have not decided yet whether to vote for him, Anthony Carter or Michael Maltman as player of the season)but is he really a number 8? I would have loved to have seen him and Maltman as our regular 6 and 7.

Similarly we have messed about with the 10, 12 and 13 positions all season and I think our lack of attacking flair and ability to apply the killer punch can partly be attributed to not having a settled unit in these positions.

A final negative is the constant rumblings about 'the club'. Whether it is rumblings about behind the scenes, the coaches or the players this has been a real negative all season and needs to be addressed whether we stay up or go down.

Some positives. Some players have been outstanding this and I must say a word for De La Harpe who no one seems to have mentioned yet. He had a great game yesterday. As well as his 2 trys (the first one even got me out of my seat)I thought his distribution from hand and his tactical kicking was excellent. I cannot help but feel that him at 9 and Thomas at 10 may just have given us a bit more attacking variety if we had tried them out more regularly.

Pennycook and Maltman were excellent also. I said earlier tis season that I think Maltman is destined for greater things (not just because he is a fellow Scot) and I thought he was excellent yesterday both in attack and defence. Carter had his usual solid game and I think that Bressington recovered really well from his first half mistake to deliver the sort of performance we know he can.

Everyone seems full of gloom and doom but anyone who read Brian Dick's excellent article about the playoffs will know that although this game was important (as they all are) the destiny of the relegation spot did not hinge on it. The permutations are endless and I still believe we can avoid the drop.

See you all next Friday.

Yesterdays was a shocking performance, we seem to save our worst performances against bees for the games that really matter in the play offs.
What hurts most is that despite their late try, bees deserved to win the game. Moseley were unable to perform even the most basic of skills with any real competence.
Agree with the comments above about team selection - if you look at the matchday program you will see that Mose have not named an unchanged side once this season. Also agree with comments about playing players out of position - it is a mystery to me, and has been for the whole season, why Ollie isnt given a run at 10. Brad Davis is too often invisible for too much of the game.
We have badly underperformed for most of the season and coaches must take responsibility for this. Regardless of how we finish this season, which now may well be with us being relegated, Smithy must go. Goodbye and good riddance.

As bitter as defeat yesterday was - and fair play to the Bees who played to the end and won - we've now got a mountain to climb to survive, and what better way to start then home and away against Esher. I want Moseley to win both matches but I do fear the worst, that if we lose both whilst Bees and Plymouth secure home wins then we may go to Damson Park with the Bees having the opportunity to deliver the coup de grâce. I bet they and their supporters would love to do that.

But we're not relegated yet and can still save our skins if we have the guts and the backbone to do it the very hard way. The supporters are up for the challenge - is there a Moseley team who are?

First, I am glad to see that the reaction to yesterday's defeat on the message board is largely well-measured.

Yesterday's game was absolutely compelling - error strewn, but good spectating.

Bees were the better team yesterday and, as earlier pointed out, team is the operative word. This group of Moseley players do not look together and do not appear to be playing for each other.

That said, it took guts and patience to come back from 15-30 down - what a pity Mose couldn't hold on. An undedeserved victory or two would not go amiss.

Relegation is a real possibility, but not a foregone conclusion. Survival can be achieved, but the most important thing for me is whether there will be a Moseley to watch next season.

Come on Mose!

Well worth considering if you happen to operate in a coaching capacity:

“We do our homework and I don’t think they do their’s as much as they should do,” Hunt said. “Most people score tries by running around them.

“We watched the Moseley-Esher game before the end of the season and they were just running around them.

“We adapt from going wide to close, it’s not really a trade secret – it’s just picking your weapon at the right time and seeing what they do to fix it.”

Any suggestions on what weapons we might deploy against Esher?

Well it did not work against Esher and nearly didn't against Moseley. We'll see if it does v Plymouth.

I am totally at a loss about yesterdays debacle,we do have A GOOD BUNCH OF PLAYERS who need to be more of a TEAM and i believe we will STAY UP.
BUT it will be the senior players in the squad that will do it not Smithy,i have lost complete faith in him and he seems lost without his sidekick Don Caskie.
I think Smiths heart and mind is else where, never at presentations, never stays 5mins more than he should, never seems to be at the club, crucial times need crucial measures, extra training?extra coaching? i bet not,any interest Mr Smith?I REALLY HOPE SO AND YOU PROVE ME WRONG.
The slayer of mose, Simon Hunt fingered Smithy as not doing his job,on the face of it he has a point, with earnshaw & hunt, playing sevens style RUGBY was always on the cards, everyone knew that with a modicum of rugby nous, did we combat it?No did we mark hunt extra? No,so does simon hunt have a point?Do not ruin our club please Mr Smith,at least pay attention and give it 100% until the end of the season, then you can escape but please please be a PROFESSIONAL for the sake of our club.

He has said what I have posted on here several times. We defend too narrowly and the opposition often can go outside because there is room to do so. It is so obvious why has Maggs(who is the backs coach) not fixed it? All he does is make 2 or 3 changes to the backs every game and doubtless is thinking of his latest changes for Friday!
To fix the problem does require the forwards to defend around the fringes and then the backs can go wider. It is not rocket science.
I agree too many changes all season result in little understanding being built up between players.
Also agree there is no harm in giving a go at 10 to Ollie as he is probably the most attack minded player we have. he cannot be worse than Davies who must be the biggest disappointment of the season. He can't kick for territory, hardly ever makes a break and his decision making is poor.
It is said Ollie is poor in defence which has some element of truth but in other teams the number 10 is not there for his defence and when defending a scrum or lineout the 10 moves to 13 and 12 or a flanker(lineout) stands at 10. Irish do it all the time with Lamb and in our league Donny do it with Roberts as do Esher with their 10.
We need to score tries in our remaining games and so we must play our most attacking team.Ollie at 10 and another winger (Styles) to support carter, Armitage, Reay and Bress would be my choice. I have to say Reay has done pretty well this season and Bishop does not look Championship match fit. Bees made breaks (or rather Hunt) down the middle. Let's go for broke because if we do lose let it be playing some real rugby.

When is Mr Smith going to man up and acknowledge some responisbility for the woeful inconsistancies HIS teams have displayed over the last 2 seasons? The finger is always pointing somewhere else!

I read Smithy's post match comments sometimes and wander if he was watching the same game as me.
Underperformance and failure to perform the basics has been a hallmark of his teams since he joined the club.
I think its completely unprofessional for a coach to castigate players in this manner.

I would be interested to see the results of a poll on how many think smith should stay in charge or go???

I think he should see out the season and then go, personally!

I think the main problem is attempting to move on from Dual Reg players too soon. As the Glos arrangement petered out and the Wuss deals all ended we just don't have the cash to fund "our own" players of that calibre.

To what extent this is Smithy's decision I'll never know, but I still give him the benefit of the doubt and get angered by demoralising rants on here calling for his head. I assume these are roundball fans, and welcome to Moseley you are, but please don't bring too much of that ethos with you. (especially the peculiar claim that players win games but coaches lose them. How bizarre is that!)

Most of all, don't panic. If ever there was a single defining characteristic of Mose sides over the years it's that old "when the going gets tough, the tough get going" spirit. Last year we lost three play off games before the going got tough enough to fire up performances at Rotherham and against Cov. We've only lost two so far
