I watched the colts game on Saturday and was pleased that they won.Although I felt that Richmond, with a much bigger, beefy and more muscular pack had the edge in the tight Moseley, suprisingly, had the advantage in the loose with some good driving mauls. Had Moseley been able to hold their own - just a shade more - on the tight head then they would have been on the front foot a little more often. However, fresh legs in the last quarter certainly shored up the front row. Three Moseley players caught my eye ( I have no names to identify them ) other than the frizzy haired hooker, the strapping lad at No 6 and the scrum half who had a superb, quick and accurate pass looked to have good potential for the future.

The three quarters played well as a unit and were a effective attacking force with some lovely individual breaks and good support play. However, I felt that the follow up to kicks upfield were not quite as urgent as they could have been and against a more streetwise team that could create problems with a quick throw in.

None-the-less, well done lads. Enjoy the win and although there is every chance that you will be drawn against an "accademy side" in the semi final I wish you well.

Investabroad National Colts Cup – Quarter Final
Moseley 22-20 Richmond

Moseley Under 19 Colts progressed to the semi-final stage of the National Colts Cup, where they will play Redingensians (away) on the weekend of 16th/17th April.

In a hard-fought encounter, Moseley prevailed over a determined and skilful Richmond team running out winners by 22-20; a successful penalty goal by Caolan Ryan in the last two minutes being the decisive score.

The game could have gone either way but ultimately, the resilience of the Moseley defence countered the bludgeon of the Richmond attack. It has to be acknowledged that two of the Richmond tries were debatable.

One was definitely held up (according to the Richmond team manager who was on the spot) another was almost certainly in touch before grounding but the unsighted ref chose to accept the word of the linesman. C’est la vie; thankfully it didn’t alter the result!

The relief at the final whistle was palpable and the contrasting reactions of both teams showed just how much the result meant to each of them; Moseley elated, Richmond out on their feet and some spread-eagled on the ground in disappointment. We know how they feel having been beaten in this round in previous years. Good luck to them for the rest of the season.

This week provides a different, though potentially equally difficult, challenge as we take on near neighbours, Bromsgrove in the quarter final of the North Midlands Cup (Billesley, 3pm).

Some of the squad who were unavailable for last week will be given an opportunity to shine, as we rest players who are carrying niggling injuries. All support welcome.

Semi Finals - to be played on or before 17th April 2011

Newbury v Bedford Blues
Redingensians v Moseley
The final is scheduled for Monday 2nd May.

Quarter Final Results
