There's several occasions where one needs surprise to pull off an action against an enemy. Such as an ambush or a steal attempt. Bad things. People are not going to wait for their target to show that he's actively playing at that moment. They're going to go with it. Its not 'bad' roleplay or etiquette.

The personal touch that was added to the rule leads me to believe its an attack against another player's roleplay.

A game set link dead notice in the character's long description could help deter a rush because the predator would know immediately that the person is unable to respond or even connected to the mud. However, there are people that will abuse this just as they use 'quit' to avoid pursuit.

As far as being protected while AFK, as far as I'm concerned thats the away player's fault.

Now, it is wrong to attack someone just for the fact that they're link dead or afk due to their being an easy target.
Should they be innately protected by rules or code because of it? No. Too abuseable.
