In reply to: jane 's message, "tie dye septic concerns" on 07:44:01 03/19/10 Fri

I have tons of experience dyeing and tie dyeing cottons (gatsby9 on etsy), and first of all I would say Rit is not the dye you want. Rit dyes are acid dyes, which are for synthetics and have to be heated. The 'acid' part might be bad for your septic.

For cotton, what you want is fiber reactive dyes. They give great color and are totally colorfast. You have to wet the item first in a solution of soda ash powder, but it is worth it. So what you *could* do is rinse the final project outside with a hose, or take it to rinse out in someone else's washer.

As for tie-dyeing technique, there are tons, but the major rule is, the dye is going to be put on with a SQUIRT BOTTLE, not just dunked in some bucket. Anyone who tie dyes in a bucket, was never taught how to tie dye! I would be happy to explain more, just email me =0)

The best supplier for fiber reactive dyes in dharmatrading.com, brown dye in your choice of many shades of brown will cost about $4. I would get two shades and two squirt bottles =)
