Her email address is mpkpatterns@aol.com. I ordered her full set and DVD through paypay on 5/19/14. After my payment went through, another tab popped up of a digital dropbox where I was able to download the files. I did have a minor issue getting my DVD (which is snail mailed) at first. She was responsive and helpful in correcting the issue.

I still haven't had a response from ebay to reach JanetLeigh Designs, to buy extra material. Has anyone else purchased from her recently? Or does anyone else have this turquois color. When I bought the apple barrel to dye some trim pieces it was just called Turqoise, even though in the photo it looks a little more vibrant. Any help would be appreciated.

Contact me for pictures of the CUSTOM MADE MESS she sent to me! NOT WEARABLE!!!! I was trying to save a little $ and used her, but in the end, I should have paid the little extra to a better dressmaker and HONEST PERSON - at least I would have a wearable dress and not a heap of scrap!
Christy where is the rest of my material?!?!?! I really need it to try to fix the mess you sent!
Before you order from this DECEIVER - ask her why she no longer has an ebay store - ask her why she had to get a new ebay ID - ask her about all the people she conned and ripped off!!!! BUT DON'T EXPECT HER TO TELL YOU THE TRUTH ABOUT ANYTHING!!!!

Hey Angela, my best friend ordered a bodice from her last year. It took Christy 4 months to get it to her. My friend had to contact the local police department, sherrif's office, etc. Paypal said she had waited too long to file a claim. Christy never sent her pictures of the bodice and ignored most of her emails. Finally, my friend got the bodice in and it was not good. She hasnt' worn it or taken it out of the box she got it in. I too, had a bad experience with her as well years ago. I have ordered recently and received my items quickly, but they were just dress decorations, not an entire dress. I hope she sends the rest of your material and makes this right. So sorry you had to go through this, because my friend still talks about her bad experience. Take Care!

I've heard SO many stories about her ripping people off since I posted this, and it's just outrageous. I think we should all get together and file lawsuits. It might not be worth it for ONE person to file a lawsuit over a $600 dress, but if we all band together, hire ONE attorney to prosecute, then maybe we can stop this once and for all. If anyone else is interested contact me and I'll see what options we have. I don't think there is a statute of limitations on this.

HEAR THAT CHRISTY?!?!?! Maybe you better start sending out fabric and refunds.... I know you see these even though you don't respond.... People are fed up. It's time for you to stop ripping people off. Get a new career - other than being a con artist. This one is going to land you in a heap of trouble!

I found a gorgeous shell on ebay that I want to get for my little girl. I am just scared I will mess it up. Does anyone have a suggestion on someone I can pay to decorate it? I don't want to much glitz since she is only going to be 19 months old when she wears it. It is for a state pageant in October. Thanks ladies!!

Hi, ladies. No I am not Miss Nancy the dress designer. lol My granddaughter is doing a photo shoot and I am making the gown that Scarlett O'Hara wore to the Twelve Oaks bbq in Gone with the Wind. It is white or off white background with light green and dark green flowers and leaves pattern. I need it in cotton. Walmart in Richmond, VA has it but they only have 6 yards. I need 15 yards. Has anyone seen this fabric at their Walmart?

I carry a stretch white satin that dyes really well. I think it is because there is lycra in it that keeps it from streaking. Also polyester instead of the acetate that most satin is made from. If interested you can contact me. Price is $10.50 per yard and is 52" wide.

I'm hoping someone can help with a problem I'm having...
When serging the edge of my organza I get some areas that the thread is nearly tearing off the finished skirt. I also noticed some of the edging slightly gathering due to the fishline.
I'm getting ready to make another skirt, anyone else have these problems or know of a fix?

Thanks in advance

Do any of you think anyone would be interested in handknit and crocheted items for photo shoots? When I don't have anything else to do I do a lot of that, and the hats and scarves are piling up. Plus, we're moving soon and I'd like to pack a little lighter!

I am in need of a kelly green cupcake skirt. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. I was even looking at the ones from China (which would work fine for my needs) but there's no green. Honestly, to get one made, how much should it cost? Is this something an experienced sewer can just whip up?

Whenever possible you should order your fabric/trims in those colors, but some have had luck using procion dyes.

Rit dye comes in red and black so you'd think that it's possible with those as well. I never really tried given the testimony of others. But I have heard that using several boxes of red will achieve brighter colors.

Procion dyes are fiber reactive dyes-- they are for natural fibers only-- cotton, linen, rayon, silk. Any color you get from them on a synthetic is just staining.

To color synthetic trims red, I would thin the right shade of red acrylic paint with a little water, paint on with a brush, repeat.

I just finished dying lace red for a dress I'm making. It turned out great.
I bought primary red craft paint at Hobby Lobby.
Mixed it with a small amount of water, enough to make it thin enough to coat without globing up on the lace. Put the lace in the paint, squeezed it out and laid out on several thicknesses of paper towel. For those of you that have a no tumble on your dryer or a rack that stabilizes in the dryer this works best. Keeps the lace from touching the drum of the dryer. Dried for about 30 minutes on high and it turned out great. No streaks at all. The reason no streaks is the paint is so concentrated. Hope this helps.

After dipping in the paint, I squeezed it out and laid on layers of paper towel on a rack that fits into my dryer. It lets the drum tumble around the rack. Dry on hot for however long it takes to dry. I did turn the lace over once so both sides would dry. Hope this helps you
If you don't have a rack for your dryer, just use lots of paper towel to soak up the residue and dry lace and towels together. Be sure to clean your dryer afterward. I have learned to put in a few wet paper towel after I dry something and that will help clean any excess dye from the drum

Hello! I am getting ready to make a dress for my darker complected daughter in a lime green. I have looked at the stock superstretch lime green and it is not the right color I am looking for. I want the color to be a little pastel (like a lime sherbet), but still slightly neon. Anyone ever dyed a dress this shade, and if so, what's a good paint combo. Thanks in advance for your help!

if you don't like that, i would probably suggest you buy one of each of the green acrylic paint colors and put a little of each on a paper plate like a palette and just start mixing until you get the color you want. i have always been able to get a pretty sherbert lime green color from neon green and white though. hope this helps

I always use the shiny side as my outside but now that I'm making things for other people I want to use the correct side. Do I use the matte or the shiny side for the outside of a bodice? When I dyed the fabric and dried it, when you face the matte side up, it curls into itself from both sides.

We have a photo shoot in October and I am looking for 'floaty' dresses or dresses with capri's underneath. I was thinking white, but then I was looking at past Naartjie lines and started thinking colors. If anyone has suggestions or can point the way to great outfits or has something they have made up that won't cost me a fortune please let me know. I really like the very twirly full skirts or dresses. I did see a Kate Mack dress that was very full.My girls are 6 and 8. My son is also doing photos but he is 11 and I was thinking I would just go with what he already has.

Yes, I have a problem with her taking $605 of my money, AND keeping 1/2 of the silk material that I special ordered from Hong Kong. I have a problem with getting a dress that isn't fit to put on my dog in return. I think a lot of people would have problems with that. I also have a problem that my child did not get to compete in the pageant as planned because of her lies and failure to provide what she promised. I have a problem that I am out $$$$ on a custom built float for the parade that was required to compete in that pageant. If you don't want to hear it, then send me $800 (about the cost of material and what I paid her, not including what I spent on the float, hotel, fees, etc) and I'll forget it, or convince her to not advertise her junk as wearable pageant attire, to tell people they'll receive something that looks like a teenager made it in Home Ec - or worse. Otherwise, I am going to do everything I possibly can to make sure that she never does this to someone else. No one should ever have to go through what I have been through. I WISH someone had posted something on a voy board about her before I did business with her. I wish I had been warned. I can't go back and use another seamstress, but I can warn other people so they will know what they can expect. She is trying to deceive people by creating a new ebay id so no one will know about the things she has done. This is all I can do to warn others.

I am very sorry you had this experience with this dress designer. I do not personally know this designer or have had the opportunity to buy anything from her, but she has been very helpful on the website. I also had the opportunity, to do additional work on a design of her's, bought by a pageant mom off of an ebay auction. The mom was very happy with the quality. It was a very well constructed dress, and the workmanship on the dress was excellent.
I personally do not like it when someone is slammed just to be slammed....but you sound like you had a real issue with your transaction with her. Sooo I do appreciate the warning. As you said, you may have thought twice in your transaction if you had heard anything or maybe would have done more research before purchasing a dress. I think however, the words being used are very harsh, and the warning can be just as strong without sounding as harsh.

I recently purchased a white shell thinking I wanted white. After putting dd in it, it washes her out horribly. I went ahead and decorated it with shades of purple along with white accents, and it still washes her out. I'm wanting to dye the dress. I'm great at decorating and stoning, but the fabric scares me. I know I've read on here in the past (looong time ago) about dying the whole shell. Can someone offer any advice? It's a babydoll style, so the organza is attached to the ss.

Hi I am a pageant mom and volley ball mom and would love to tell every mother out there the importance of yearly physicals and mammograms and regular checkups, I was a busy mom, pageants and volleyball and my kids and marriage take up all your time and we never do anything for ourselves, I was like that until last year, and had cancer surgery this past january, I worked was never sick, went in for a routine physical and had anemia and after a six month back and fourth test after test they found a tumor attached to my stomach, so everything is fine but please while your all going to pageants and planning vacations plan a little time for yourself and get checkups, I am 40 years old was not in poor health but left myself on the back burner for everyone else, have a blessed day and remember without us where would everyone else be!!!!!!!!!!!! God bless.

I bought a channel and a louis vuitton swimsuit, both two pieces for my daughter for a photo shoot and just to wear at the beach but they are too big, they are too cut brand new with tags still attached, probably won't get what I paid for just one but thought I would see if anyone was interested, great for the summer. 100.00 for both and that is a steal. thanks email for pics

thanks for the suggestion however not sure if that will work i think it will make it too bikini cut if i do that. eventually i need to put a new bottom on it but she has to wear this weekend and just don't have the time for that right now. Do u think it would work if i just added a few inches of material to the crotch seam to make it longer so the leg opening would be bigger?

I bought patterns from MPK and just print whatever I need at the time. Well I have an order and I threw away the pattern I printed from a few weeks ago. I went back to print another one two days ago and the link she gave me has been deleted, or at least the file has been. I have no way of getting to my patterns. I of course can't get ahold of her so if anyone has a pattern for a size 24 month bodice top for a pageant dress I could either have or purchase please let me know!!! I would prefer a tank style bodice, no seams. Thanks so much.

Hi. I have read here for a while but am new to the pageant scene and just learning about building dresses. I have noticed that on several ebay listings they state "kept in a plastic container". Why is this necessary? I have made several dresses for my 1 year old and want to be sure to "keep" them properly.

Thanks!!

Hi,

I keep my daughters in a plastic tote for several reasons. To me I can lay the skirt fanned out and it seems to keep the shape better. I found that with our first dress, hanging it seemed to relax the skirt. Next it keeps the stones from being rubbed against anything else hanging in the closet and that way the don't fall off. Then last I already have it packed in the tote and it's one less thing to worry about packing to go to a pageant. Plus it's easy to carry. Hope that helps!

You can also put your girls socks, panties, hairbows, accessories all in a little ziplock bag and store them in the same container, keeping all of the ensemble together, eliminating lost items.

My daughter is tiny and I can't find a super full pettiskirt that is short enough for her so I'm going to sew it myself. My only question is, when you shirr the strips of chiffon, do you have use elastic thread or can you use regular thread for both the needle and the bobbin?

sometimes you can slowly work the snagged thread back in by stretching gently back and forth kind of on a diagnol, pulling the snagged thread back in. This doesn't always work..sometimes it only helps to not notice the snags as much.

In addition to what Lisa said, my mother used to take one of her tiny thread crochet hooks and poke it carefully through the hole where the snag is and bring what's left of the snag to the other side. It's a trick I still use - makes it a lot less noticeable.

Hello!
My name is Samantha. My sister and I just resently took over a children's apparel store that also sells pageant dresses. We have been trying to find plain pageant dress shells to embelish ourselves to sell in our shop. We are in a small town so the ones we already have everyone has seen from the last store so, we are trying to get some different more modern looks. Also, I was wondering if you might know how to dye a dress using airbrush paint. If you know anything that can help us please let me know.
Thanks!

I made these years ago and just cut a circle with a slit a small circle for the neck hole and serged it all the way around took 15 minutes and you can even make extra to sell if you like. I even embroidered her initials on it.

I have tried using the apple barrel paint method of dying superstretch and organza and it's too splotchy. Is there another way?

[ Post a Reply to This Message ]
[> Subject: Mix with water in a qt jar and shake. Then pour into dye container with more water. To dye SS it should be more concentrated.I dont add the stuf to set paint. That makes it spotty. The color will be heat set in the dryer.Just dip and squeeze out.Put in dryer with old towels.Take it out every 10 mins and rub wet spots back into the dry spots.Organza, take out every 5 mins. and rub good to distribute paint. Dip and dry until color is achieved. No spotting should occur.Paint mix should be a little darker than color needed. To dye organza the paint should be about 1 bottle paint to 1 1/2-2 gal of water.

Before I go out and spend some mega bucks on a new sewing machine, I was wondering if anyone could share their experience with their machines.

I have a Husquvarna serger (love it) but now it is time to replace my sears sewing machine with something a bit more heavy duty. After becoming frustrated that I can't loosen the tension on a straight stitch to gather, I've decided this one has go to go.

I sew primarily pageant clothes, beauty dresses, swimwear, casual wear, etc...

Any advice or reccomendations would be appreciated.

I don't have any experience with Husquvarnas, but I would suggest if you're happy with their serger, getting a sewing machine from them, unless you're looking for something industrial. I've heard good things about the brand, and you would have the added advantage of being able to have them serviced at the same place.

Hi!

I have used singer and brother machines and sergers and love them both.
I would, however, suggest the singer machines because you can find more service providers for that brand. They will usually not work on the Brother brand.

With any machine, if you can learn to service it yourself regularly, it will last many years and save a ton of money on repairs.

Good Luck!

I have both a Husq. and a Janome. I feel the Janome has the superior stitch. JMHO and good luck finding your machine, I know most of it is just a matter of getting a good fit between the seamstress and the machine. :)

I use it everyday for superstretch and lycra. I stopped sewing pageant attire for a while and went into making quilts and it worked great for that. I suggest going to the sewing machine store and sitting down with some superstretch and lycra and trying them out. Just like buying a car you have to take it for a test drive.

I would stay away from the lighter weight fabrics though. I've made a few with that kind of light weight fabrics and you would have to use a heavier weight liner. I like to use only two way stretch liner. It keeps the garment in shape (For lack of a better term). Make sure the stretch on your two way stretch liner runs from side to side too.

It's really easy. Just cut the pattern out and then add the cut for the back. All you need to do for the lace up back is put lil loops of fabric to pass the lacing thru.

cut out a leaf pattern on paper. you are going to have 5 leaves for each flower. then cut 5 of them out of superstretch making them a little bit larger for seam allowance. take floral wire and bend it in the shape of the original paper cutout. lay it on the superstretch petal, then use hot glue or E-6000 and run a line of it over the top of the wire and fold the excess seam allowance over the wire. after it dries, you can bend it like a petal to make it more realistic. then stone around the edges and put all the petals together. hope this makes sense

So it is just wire that is glued on to the back of the superstretch that gives the superstretch flowers their shape? Wow...would have never guessed! Thanks for the help!

I recently got a dress off of ebay. First of all, it is absolutely beautiful. I do have one concern though. It is hot glued in many spaces. I am new to the "glitz" "cupcake" style of dress, and so I was just wondering if this was quite normal. Also, she sent me "anchors" (plastic rings)and the ribbon to match in case I want to switch it over to a "tie back". I wanted to see if anyone could guide me with this task and let me know how hard or easy that is. Please no bashing though. The dress is really one of the most gorgeous my "newby" eyes have seen. I just wanted to make sure that it will do okay in the pageant, and see about turning the back over into the "tie back". Also, it currenly has two velcro patches that keep it together in the back. One on top and one on bottom and has what I believe is called a "keyhole". Not sure if this info is needed to help me!

Thanks :)

I prefer to hot glue my trim on. It's quick and stays on. I know alot of designers sew the trim on. I haven't had much luck with that so I stick with my handy glue gun. If it's glued right then you shouldn't be able to tell the difference in the finished product, glued or sewn.

I need a yard of white jumbo superstretch to make some bodice tops. I have managed to screw up all the fabric I had by not getting the right color when I dyed it. Now that I have the right color coming out on the swatches, I'm all out of fabric. I need this to be shipped out on Monday with priority through USPS so that it will be here no later than Thursday.

So if anyone has any for sale at a good price please let me know. I can purchase it from the store that is about an hour away for $18 a yard but that would be an extra stop and my husband hates the fabric store. Easier to just buy online. So I would like to keep the price under $25 including shipping.

Please email me if you have what I'm looking for. I probably won't check this forum at least for a few days so email is much easier to get ahold of me. I will be paying with paypal.

Back a few years ago when I was wanting to sew for my daughter, I was getting a local seamstress to make my clothes, well for what I was paying for clothes, I opted for sewing lessons from her, she showed me how to make hats, and how to make my own patterns, totally worth the investment and we became great friends, I don't do pageants anymore but the experience was great and I learned to sew swimsuits and everything, good luck ladies.

I'm making a swimsuit for my DD, but I need some serious help with sewing in the elastic. I seem to lose all stretch around the legs (butt cheek area). Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

But if you're a beginner, that's brobably the best way for you to do it too. I also use a serger when putting in my elastic. Love it immensely. But it takes tons of practice to do it that way. If you have a serger and want to try it that way, let me know and I'll walk you thru it. You can email me or call 985-758-1751 anytime!

I am having the worse time with two and 4 way stretch swimsuit type material. My thread constantly wants to bunch and break. I've tried a cotton and a poly/cotton blend. Is there a specific type of thread that works better than another. Could it be the needle. What point and size. I also get missed stitches. I have the same issue when sewing on the dotted metallic materials too. But I assumed that was the material (the metallics cutting into the thread). Help.. Help.... Before I pull my hair out!! Thanks in advance for any help!

I usually set my stitch length at about medium to smaller size zig zag. Set both the length and width to about the same size. I also use just regular old polyester/cotton thread. And I've learned along the way to stay far away from the fabrics that have any kind of spangles/sequins glued on. The glue gums up the needle and it makes the thread bunch and break like crazy! Hope this helps you out! If not you can always email me or call mea at 985-758-1751 anytime, I'd be gald to help you out!!

P.S. I would love to have 3 gross of the pointbacks and at least 1/2 gross each of the crystal and ab navettes.

i take a large piece of fabric and cover the shoe, pin it to the shoe and carefully cut around the edges. then i glue it with fabric glue or hot glue and trim the edges neatly. then cover all the seams with rick rack or other trim and fray block the holes for the shoe strings if you cover them. it will take a few pairs to get the hang of it, so don't do it on an important outfit until you practice on a few!

hope this helps :+)

I usually start in the center with neatly folded pleats, tack those in, then work to the outside pinning my pleats in place as I go. After I'm happy with the pattern of the pleats, I baste along the outside edges then trim off the excess fabric.

How many fabric circles do you use for each skirt layer? I was advised to do 3 on bottom 2 on middle and 2 on top.

If I want a super full skirt, do you think that would be enough or do I need to make each one 3 circles long?

Opinions would be appreciated so I don't ruin my 8 yrds of organza.

TIA! :)

Where is the best place to buy superstretch for a western wear and lycra for swimwear? Should I get the 4 way lycra or will that be too heavy?

www.spandexhouse.com or www.spandexworld.com . You want jumbo lycra (superstretch) for the ww and either 4 way lycra or milliskin for the swimsuit. Milliskin is a little thicker than the regular lycra and a lot easier to work with but it isn't anywhere close to being as thick as the superstretch so it still looks good. A lot of Sandi Henry's solid color suits are milliskin. Buy cotton lycra for the swimsuit lining. Regular swimsuit lining is too thin for competition suits and a bugger to sew.

Good luck.

Forgot to caution you - if you are looking at patterned lycra be sure to stay away from the "stamped" fabrics. The metallic image is usually just stamped on the fabric instead of woven in so if you use it on a part of the suit that needs to stretch the stamp or hollogram will crack when the fabric base stretches.

Nona has been a great inspiration and resource for everyone on this board. Although I'm not a fan of broadcasting personal information on the board, I was given permission to pass along a message from Deb (Nona's daughter) that I received this morning. She said that Nona has had some setbacks since she came home and has been admitted to the hospital again.

Please keep her and her family in your thoughts and prayers during this time.

If you have an opportunity to send her a sweet note for a speedy recover to her email address, I'm sure that Deb will pass it along.

it really isn't that difficult to make a western wear shell if you are familiar with sewing. you first need to decide the style of tops and bottoms you want. shorts or skirt is probably easiest. it takes ALOT of fringe to cover pants. sew the bottoms together, and fringe it most of the way up overlapping just a little. then sew the top together and decorate it with fringe, mirrors, stones, fur, etc. then you can decorate boots and hat. unless you do a pretty standard color like black, white or red, you'll have to dye boots and hat or cover them with superstretch to match. i can help you with a shell if you don't want to do it yourself. just email me at pageantdesignsbyvalerie@gmail.com

you can also go to my website and look at some western wears i have made in the photo gallery. this may give you some ideas on what to make.

hope this helps :+)

You cant try MPK but it my take awhile to get your pattern. You quickest best would be to hit up a target, they have suits for less than $10. Measure/trace the suit and transfer around the fabric and voila!

I've done this in a couple moments of desperation and it works great!

Debbie,

I have a 4T zebra and aqua glitz swimwear with 2 hairbows, anklet, choker, and clip on earrings. It has been worn 2X and in like new condition and helped us win swimwear at a nationals for our division. I am selling it for $150 and it is worth every $. I have pics I can email.

Additionally, I do custom swimwear to your specifications and have a 3-4 week turnaround. My quality is comparable to the big name designers, but my prices are are easier on the pocketbook. Send me a message if you are interested in either.

Thanks!

I personally don't think it's priced high but ebayers will. I haven't been able to sell a dress for more than 250 and it had close to 5 gross of stones. My babydoll with 10 gross of stones is listed for $400 OBO and I've gotten one offer for $150. People want something for nothing right now (including me... LOL!) and unless you are a name designer then you won't be getting much for outfits right now.

I like the colors and design though. Looks very well made.

It's just my opinion, but it would make a great starter dress, for local and maybe state pageants. Moms might see it and want to add more to it for a national.

I have posted questions on here recently regarding dying fabric and everyone has been very helpful, now I'm looking for a little more help.

Now that I have my dying technique down, I'm curious to know if I should make the bodice and skirt then dye them or to do it before I assemble the bodice and skirt.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I sew my skirt together first than dye it , but the bodice I dye the fabric first than assemble. for some reason the seams dont dye.

My daughter is getting married July 25th and we are having trouble finding chiffon fabric in the(pink)shades she wants. We are looking for "berry" shades, such as raspberry and other deep shades of pink/purple. She has 9 bridesmaids and she wants three different color dresses. Each dress will require 3 yards of fabric each. We have been to several fabric stores and can't find the colors we want. If anyone could help us we would really appreciate it. At this point we are DESPERATE!!!!

Trying going to this website to choose your colors - www.orioletex.com then call Mary Jo's ((704) 861-9100 ) to see if they have them or something similiar in stock. Oriole is wholesale and requires a minimum order of 25 yards per color but Mary Jo's usually has a pretty good selection of colors and sells retail so you can just purchase the small yardage you need.

I sometimes have good luck finding things at www.denverfabrics.com and they ship pretty quickly.

We are planning my daughter's wedding as well so I certainly wish you the best!
