In reply to: New to sewing PM 's message, "How much material" on 13:39:14 09/22/09 Tue

I am needing to purchase my material. Can anyone let me know how much I need or is there a pattern that will tell me all this.

There isn't a pattern that I know of that gives you that information. You can probably get 10 different ways to make a skirt on the site. And 10 different yardage measurements too. It depends on how full you want your skirt and how you make your skirt/style. Everyone seems to do them just a little different. Some designers/seamstresses sew two top layers (full to semi-full) then one or two full ruffle layers with two rows of ruffles on each layer. I have seen skirts that have 2 semi full top layers and 3 single layered (semi full gathered) ruffles. And the skirt is actually a pretty full cupcake skirt (which is works for a smaller child) not sure how that would work for an older/larger size. I know none of this is probably going to help since it's not actual yardage measurments that you are looking for.

I have actually sewn a full skirt between a cupcake and southern style 2T skirt with 3 yards of organza...lots of ruffles. Turned out beautiful. But I have also used up to 5 yards in a skirt. Which was very full and very tight. I actually perferred the movement of the skirt that had the less yardage in it. (but it did have a layer of the lining material in the skirt too to boost the color of the organza I used) I can send pix to show you the different skirts (layers and materials I have used if you like) to give you a better idea of what I am talking about.

Hope it helped a little.
