Isn't wonderful how we all get along? :) I also agree with both suggestions provided that common sense is utilized as well. Certain situations may dictate that attacking multiple monsters is completely absurd. Thus, I believe that the ultimate decision should be left to the DM. The spell idea is a great one. I would certainly assume that a magic-user would spend much of his free time researching spells.
