Some of it does seem unfair, for sure, but the good thing is that it does not effect what you get, i.e. nothing is taken away from your check. They will just base what she gets in relation to what you made. Typically, a wife who didn't work would get about the equivalent of half her husband's amount, and then if he dies, she would get bumped up to his full amount as a "widow".

They are changing some of these rules for younger people now, though, so age is a factor.
