Well, here is my story about my 7 year old son ... Ian just turned 7 on June 8th and will be entering the first grade in a few weeks. We held him back an extra year due to a lack of maturity and it was a good decision. He is, however, doing above grade work and I hope to "skip" him a grade sometime in the next few years to catch him up to where he should be.

Last summer, Ian was diagnosed with ADHD and a high-functioning form of autism called Asperger's Syndrome. This diagnosis was made by a Children's Hospital-associated clinic. Many recommendations were made regarding medications, therapy, etc. We tried some physical therapy last summer for 2 months, but didn't see that it was really helping him any so we quit. We opted to try medication and it is helpful in reducing his hyperactivity and increases his ability to focus on his school work, but kills his appetite. After a year on the meds, he's only gained a half-pound and he's only in the 25th percentile to begin with. So, I've basically taken him off of his medication for the summer and will try to school him WITHOUT the meds. beginning July 8th. I go to the pediatrician in mid-August for a weight check and follow-up with the Dr. and will be able to decide then if I wish to continue with the meds. I may decided to switch to a 3-4 hour medicine so that his lunch and dinner appetite is not affected. Currently he is on Concerta which lasts up to 12 hours!

To tell you the truth, I'm not currently seeing much difference with him on and off the meds with regards to his distractability. It takes a lot of work on my part (and HIS part, too!) to keep him on topic whehter he is taking the meds or not. Bless his little heart, but he just can't help himself - LOL! His mind is always going a mile a minute and he is so intelligent that sometimes I can't keep up with his train of thought - he's like a stack of dominoes! One thought leads to another, then another, then another, etc. I think he is more creative and imaginative OFF of the meds and I'm willing to trade this for the hyperactivity. I so much enjoy working with him when he's really thinking about his school subjects. I may have to tie him down to make him do his work (haha!), but at least his creativity is coming through.

I understand your struggles and totally sympathize with you. We do not make any diet restrictions, but he is a picky eater and if I eliminated wheat and dairy products, there wouldn't be much left for him to eat! I just try to remain patient and love him for who he is ... you are right when you say that God has created our children this way for a reason. I'm sure we'll know what that reason is if we can just get through these early years!

Kris
