He came out putting on his bracelet. Talk about s-e-x-y. He had on his red, black and white Reebox Iverson jersey and shorts, black I3 Pocket visor and the Reebox IV DMX Low I3 black and white shoes. “Boy, you lookin’…scrumptious for real” I laughed getting up from the couch admiring his look. He smiled. “You ready to roll?”
“Yeah, let’s go,” I said waiting for him to turn out all the lights.
“And at half time we are sponsored by the Boys and girls Club of America. Leading the Panthers at 27 and the Timbers at 21. Close call and any one’s game,” One of the announcers by the name of Mike said out to the crowd.
“That’s right Mike and with they’re star new player by the name of Darius Woods right from this area I think this is what the Panthers were looking for. Many of these guys play middle or high school level basketball. Only three fourteen year olds on the Panthers and the rest fifteen. Amazing players,” Brian, the other announcer, said as we walked into Freda A Bourne gym. Parents and kids cheering everywhere. I looked from side to side for Mamam and finally spotted her camcording Darius down below. A lot of females were just staring at Reggie.
“Baby, baby look! I needa got a good picture of yooouuu!” Mama whined down at Darius. He just covered his face with his towel talking to the dude next to him. “Hey Mama, we winning huh?”
“Yup. Darius got them a few points. I think he got a good ten points in on there. He’s been really good!” Mama yelled and I was sitting right next to her. She turned the cam towards me like I wanted to be in the spotlight.
“Girl, smile! Your brother acting like he don’t know me, but that’s alright. I got him,” She yelled out trying to make him hear her. He turned around and stuck his tongue out at me and started laughing. I did it right back. I ain’t no punk. I’ll whoop his little butt.
“Reggie? Boy, where you come from?!” Mama asked turning off the camera.
“He called me on my cell while I went to go run those errands I told you about. Yeah, so-”
“I asked her about Darius’ game and how I wanted to come give support and she came and got me. It was just spur of the moment,” He explained smiling that winner’s smile. Mama didn’t even question it she just smiled and looked up at the scoreboard starting a chant. She wasn’t no damn cheerleader. “Panthers! Panthers! Panthers!” Mama started and our side started in on it. I started laughing looking at Darius as he ran out onto the court again. It was the last quarter and four minutes left in the game. Three minutes. Two minutes.
“Darius has the ball. He dribbles down court and oh there’s a steal by number 23 on the Timbers! He’s going down court and oh my goodness Darius raises and steals the ball back!
“59 seconds in the game with Darius no where to throw. Open at Joshua Baker of the Panthers. Darius fakes left and tosses to Josh. Josh heads down court and goes for the lay up and…it’s in! The game’s over! 73-62 in Panther favor! Whoa, what a game!” Brian announced as the Panther’s side goes wild. This game was even more exciting than a game at school.
I ran down to Darius as he walked off court like he was the king. “Dar-i-us, how you feel champ?” I asked like I was some sportscaster.
“I feel good. We had great teamwork and we were doing our thing out there. Oh boy tried to show me up, but I put the ice in his mouth and shut him up! It don’t matter because we won the game! Whoop whoop!” He yelled into my imaginary mike hand spitting on me. We started laughing. Then, Mama came in front of us filming like we were on television. He started walking off and then came back. “Yeah, I wanna give a shout out to Mom’s and my girl Halle Berry, Aaliyah (R.I.P Babygirl), my cousin Ashanti and of course my lovely yet ugly sister Mar-ci-anna…” He joked laughing and walking away. I pushed him up against Reggie and Reggie was laughing. “That ain’t funny. You ugly punk! Anyways, say, Josh, come here!” I called over to Joshua who was throwing a towel on the chair. “So, how you feel? I mean, you did do the lay up that won this game,” I asked putting my imaginary mike to him.
“Well, I feel good. I did what I had to do for us to win this game even though Darius did his thing I know I did better,” He joked as Darius came over and pushed him out of the way. I pushed him back and pulled Reggie over next to me while Mama was still video taping.
“This is my baby Reggie and he is a star basketball player at the best school in California Bridgewood. Reggie, tell ‘em baby”
“Yeah I play for Bridgewood home of the mighty cougars and we are still undefeated though this season is not that well, but we still doing our thing. This is my girl right here, Macy. She’s beautiful and talented and I can’t wait until she start working at McDonald’s so I can get free meals!” He yelled at the camera. I pushed him out of the way as we all started laughing and Mama turned the camera off.
“Yall all get together so I can get this Kodak moment on my still camera,” Mama directed us as we stood together and took the picture. Mama took us out for pizza at Cici’s with Joshua and his family. It was cool because his little sister, big sister and big brother were there along with his mother and father.
“He’s home schooled and he likes to play basketball so we put him in this program. I mean, we live in Inglewood and it’s hard to really want him to be in a hard environment, ya know?”
“Well, I’m from Inglewood and I don’t feel like it’s really that bad over there. Is it?”
“It’s okay. I just felt more secure with him at home. I don’t really trust or like the school system. It’s okay though because when I did pull him from public school he still gets to see his friends and go to school games and stuff,” Joshua’s mom explained as we ate the pizza.
“I think this league is great for the guys as well because you make more friends, more positive outlook and it’s fun. He’s been in the league since he was in the seventh grade. They help the guys out. Most of them are, ya know, African American and society tends to lure African American males to just play basketball, but with the league they do teach all the boys that it’s not the only chance and they can do other things in life,” Joshua’s dad explained taking another pizza from the trey.
“Yeah. I’m glad I got him in this,” Mama replied interested in anything that they had to say. I started thinking that Joshua’s brother was really a cutie.
“So, you gave two sons and a daughter. How is that?” Mrs. Baker asked smiling at us.
“Oh no, I only have two kids. The handsome young man over there is Marcianna’s boyfriend. He lives not too far from us. He’s not a hassle and really sweet so we really adore him,” Mama complimented. That was the first time she ever said how she felt about Reggie though I knew that she liked him she just never expressed it.
“Marcianna, that’s quite a name. Where is it from?” Mrs.Baker asked yet another question. “Well, my name’s Anna and my mom’s name is Marci so we put two together and came up with her name. I’m really proud of it because it’s different. She doesn’t like it as much, so we call her Macy as a nickname. Macy, that’s her name,” Mama explained sipping some of her soda.
So, the talking and eating continued on until everyone was just about to fall asleep in their seats. Darius, Josh and his brothers went over to the video games to play for a while. I just was sitting and talking to Reggie and Josh’s sisters. Mama exchanged numbers with the Bakers. I let Mama know I had to take Reggie home and we went our separate ways.

IT AIN'T OVA' YET!!!!!!
