Hello Glenn,
Thanks very much for the advice, you really know your stuff. I will try to be short (although this is not my strength; and I have a long question for you and everybody who wants to enlighten me).
1. What I did:
I cleaned the carb with carb cleaner. I used the throat method though, on Sunday, but one of these days I will do the trick with the fuel inlet, which I think is a great idea, better than the throat method. However, after I read your note yesterday (also read all the archive like you suggested), I cleaned the carb on the outside, all around. The choke isn't sticky anymore, it’s way better than before. The engine runs very nice most of the time. Last night I took it for a 1 ½ hour test ride, during which I felt it a bit hesitant at high rpm just a few times. Also, it bogged down to a full stop in two occasions, about 10 minutes apart. The way it died down might be of interest, so here it goes: running at about 60+Km/h on gear 5 or 4, it started losing power, decelerating and shaking a bit, I quickly downshifted, 3 - gas pedal, rpm went up and back down, 2 - gas pedal, rpm went up then back down, then I just let it die and pulled over. Tried to start right away, it cranked but didn't start; after about 15 to 30s I started it and continued on like nothing happened. This evening (I just came back), during an almost 1 ½ hour ride, it almost died on me a couple of time, and it really died on me once, all in the same manner described above. I’m assuming and hoping this is the effect of the carb cleaner I put in the gas tank; maybe it’s hauling dirt through the fuel system. I will continue to observe it. I hope its not anything serious, like the fuel pump quitting on me, or something. I will also check the EGR one of these days.
By the way, I checked the fuel level in the carb through that little window and its in the middle, with engine stopped, idling, or at high rpm, so I don’t think I have a sunken floater (the gas level should be high at some point, right?).
2. Question:
Checking the vacuum hoses this evening, I noticed that some hoses/pipes in two places are plugged (not by the factory, but with some screws stuck in there) and I’m wondering if that’s Okay. I don’t have a book (I will get one soon), I just downloaded a vacuum diagram from the net with no explanations or names for components, just numbers on the circuits. That seems to be the closest to what I see in my engine compartment. However I would like to describe to you, and all the car wizards out there the plugged ones I have, maybe you ca tell me what they are/do, and if it’s Ok with them plugged.
First one: there is a thick hose (12mm=1/2’’) that starts from the upper side of the intake manifold on cylinders 1 and 2 side, and goes into a short, horizontal, plastic pipe with five exits/entries, three below (#25, 19 and 14) and two on top, not numbered because they are plugged. One of the two would go to the cruise control (according to the diagram I got my hands on), which I don’t have, so I see why it’s plugged (by the factory looks like), but the other one it’s shown on the diagram to go to some piece that I don’t know what it is and I can’t find on my car (on the diagram it looks like a relatively small vertical cylinder with one entry and one exit). From this cylinder piece, as shown on the diagram, an unnumbered hose goes somewhere to the back-bottom of the carb.
Second one: The number 17 hose starts from the bottom of the air filter housing and goes into a T piece, one side of which goes to the two plugs on the back of the intake manifold. The other side of the T, according to the diagram, it’s supposed to be connected to a metal pipe that goes to the left hand of the engine compartment, where it connects to a hose that goes somewhere right behind the distributor. Well, on my car, this other side of the T and the metal pipe are disconnected from one another and plugged with screws.
Can anybody enlighten me?
That’s it for know.
Thanks again Glenn, and I would appreciate any advice from anybody on the vacuum issue.
